Fantaisie

This thread is dedicated to dreamy imagery, meticulous sound design, cinematic styles and themes, photography, surrealism and the jig-saw puzzles of artistic ideas that you appreciate and appeal to you.

It can include film directors, photographers, production artists and composers and artists of all forms.

I kick-off with one of my favourite artists, the impossible David Lynch.

David Lynch's Mulholland emphasizes that not only does fantasy offer a solution to the dealock of desire but that also fantasy provides a way of staging an encounter with trauma and an authentic experience of loss that would be impossible without it.

His Lost Highway explores the structure of fantasy and desire from male subjectivity and Mulholland Drive does so for female subjectivity.

Mulholland Drive is a feminist version of Lost Highway.

Pretty 505 was composed by David for Mulholland Drive.

Lynch has that knack of playing with low-level lighting and lots of make-up! Also wonderful music score and cast.

Isabella: Thanks for the interesting and amusing link.

You raise a good point. What qualifies?

It makes sense for this thread to be as broad and as incoherent in nature as you wish. No particular thread narrative applies. Going off in tangents is welcomed.

I believe that the moderators will be looking for good sense when it comes to posting, i.e. does it feel right to you and for glocals.com?

Wim Wenders - Wings of Desire.
An indescribable film

"And we, spectators always, everywhere,
looking out of, everything!"
--Rilke

At first it's not possible to describe anything beyond a wish or a desire. That's how it was for Wim Wenders when he create Wings of Desire. You wish that something might exist, then you can work on it until it does. And in the end you have a picture or pictures of something, you have music or a story, or an extraordinary combination of all these things; a film.

Wenders sees the act of filming as a heroic act (not always, not often, but sometimes). For a moment, the gradual destruction of the world of appearances is held up.

The camera is a weapon against the tragedy of things, against their disappearing.

D.H. Lawrence --WILD THINGS IN CAPTIVITY

Wild things in captivity

while they keep their own wild purity

won't breed, they mope, they die.

All men are in captivity,

activie with captive activity,

and the best won't breed, though they don't know why.

The great cage of our domesticity

kills sex in a man, the simplicity

of desire is distorted and twisted awry.

And so, with bitter perversity,

gritting against the great adversity,

the young ones copulate, hate it, and want to cry.

Sex is a state of grace.

In a cage it can't take place.

Break the cage then, start in and try.

--D.H. Lawrence

Of Flesh and Fantasy - In the Santuary of the Erotic Mind We Find a Direct Route to Pleasure.

"The whole fauna of human fantasies, their marine vegetation, drifts and luxuraites in the dimly lit zones of human activity, as though plaiting thick tresses of darkeness

Here, too, appear the lighthouses of the mind.

The gateway to mystery swings open at the touch of human weakness and we have entered the realms of darkness.

One small step, one slurred syllable together reveal a man's thoughts."

--Louis Aragon

"In one of the more imaginative collaborations we’ve seen of late, Christian Louboutin and David Lynch have locked heads and created a show, Fetish, which opens today in Paris in Pierre Passebon’sGalerie du Passage. The exhibition shows five limited edition pairs of shoes byLouboutin alongside five signed photographs of the shoes by Lynch. As if Louboutin’s day-to-day footwear weren’t fetishistic enough, the pair together has taken the theme to an entirely new level."

This is good too, but very direct in approach. I like the previous one better as there is some element of mystery to it, since you cannot make out clearly at first glance what exactly it is. Great work!Keep on at it David. Good luck!

Its sometimes funny, sad, shocking or just beautiful.People seem to put their hearts in those secrets and cards, and i enjoy reading them every sunday when there are new ones posted.

Angelus Novus - Klee

An angel is depicted who looks as though he
were about to distance himself from something
which he is staring at.

His eyes are opened wide, his mouth stands open
and his wings are outstretched.

His face is turned towards the past.
Where we see the appearance of a chain of events,
he sees one single catastrophe, which unceasingly
piles rubble on top of rubble and hurls it before his feet.

He would like to pause for a moment to awaken the dead
and to piece together what has been smashed.

But a storm is blowing from Paradise, it has caught itself up
in his wings and is so strong that the Angel can no longer close them.

The storm drives him irresistibly into the future, to which his
back is turned, while the rubble-heap before him grows sky-high.

That which we call progress, is this storm.

Be Iconic by Film Director Jonas Akerlund.
Music by Duran Duran.

Kate Moss is now starring in a film to show she's an Addict
of quite a different nature.

The video was designed and shot in Paris by production artist
Jonas Akerlund, film director for Britney Spears and Lady Gaga.

It shows Moss prepping for a fashion show, swiping on the lipstick,
facing crowds of ravenous paparazzi.

Kate encourages us: “Be iconic”.
Or was it “Ironic”?

Even though I am not a fan of Kate Moss at all, I think this is a brilliant video. One really gets addicted to it and I from the perspective of advertising and marketing of this product and the logo "Be Ionic" is very catchy!Though she walks out of her messy apartment the designer clothes, shoes, bags strewn all over the place are all but aesthetic pieces of fashion accessories. I think this advertisement would take women who usually don't buy lipstick to buy lipstick such as me. Had it been another model perhaps it would make for an even better video. The shots that burst from one to another create this effect and it is rather interesting what the director has done. The music compliments the actions taking place and execution is superb!Great find David and thanks for sharing! It is convincing and addictive. This is the power of advertising I guess!

Reaction to the fed me poster: She does need to be fed!!!Not only fed but watered and given sunlight to as well :)hahaha like a wilting plant. I wonder why this emaciated look is so much in fashion nowadays. It makes women look so unnatural. It is so ugly in fact and there is no beauty in this dull look where these women have to starve themselves. Since age immemorial beauty has not been equated with this emaciated look ever why now!In one of Anthony Hopkins's interview he stated something similar and commented about women forcing themselves to look a certain way: the emaciated look.

I think the video is very well photographed,
especially the black & white clips.

The shots that burst from one to the other have an echo
of Zack Snyder's style of producing films that are lean,
fast-paced and with initial tension.

Ackerlund already directs films for Madonna, Lady G
and others now seems to be now moving into the commercial
market.

Definitely Madonna's "Ray of Light" was an awesome video by the same director  Jonas Ackerlund. In Dior addict ad the model is cavorting around a Paris apartment. The treatment of the subject is completely different from Madonna's video. The cinematography in both are very different. Then the ones with Lady Gaga are super kitschy though.

Duran Duran UNSTAGED
Directed by David Lynch

Film director David Lynch was paired with Duran Duran as part of the American Express UNSTAGED series that pairs bands with directors for live, globally-streaming concert events.

Presented in hi-contrast black & white with instances of color, Lynch’s visual component consisted of performed super-impositions over Duran Duran’s concert. The result was a completely unique blend of both artists oscillating boldly between symmetry and asymmetry, each embracing the true notion of live experimentation. Below is the show’s opener, the string prelude “Return to Now,” followed by the band’s entrance “All You Need Is Now:”

Visit Duran Duran’s Vevo page to see excerpts from the live webcast:

I saw it a few times and it is simply brilliant. The idea is interesting. But the painting on transparent surface has been done before by Picasso in one of the videos at the Malaga Picasso Museum. It looks great. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks - great clip.I recently bought the Twin Peaks
complete boxed series with pilot versions. When I left
the UK, I fell out of touch with the series so was planning
to revisit it.

Lynch has certainly an eye for aesthetics and lighting.

Mélanie Laurent in Dior

She looks a lot different here than in her role
in Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds.

It's not "Blue Velvet" but "Lady Blue" for Dior.
Here Lynch uses the hallmark Twin Peaks,
Mulholland Drive feel for a $2000+ handbag.
