Fetes de Geneve - Overated
Guys,

Is it just me, or do you also find this whole Fetes de Geneve thing to be overated?

OK, it ain't bad. There's lots of food stands & rides, and some good music. But most people talk of it like it's some super exciting amazing happening that is a unique not-to-be-missed thing. Personally, I find it a bit boring. 1 night there is all I can take.

Same applies for the fireworks, by the way.

Am I just becoming a grumpy old man?

Translator: I guess all our parents start looking the same at some point...(-:

Simsim: True, like everything else in life: it's what you make of it. But I personally couldn't make much of the Fetes de Geneve basic offering...

And then we start looking like them... and perhaps it doesn't stop there :w00t:

Think it helps to pace yourself with F de G - find a stage you like, food stand you love... I always love outdoor happenings by night, with throngs of people, smells of food and good beats. But I am also pretty selective and tend to avoid what is not doing it for me.

Last night was really nice to have a fantastic view of fireworks from nr pirate ship by Orange Cinema (sth else I much appreciate) and could kick back with nothing obscuring that view and watch the display, dubiously coordinated to music, and then go get some fresh-baked pizza to share with friends (some, ok, I was hungry!), and friends of friends..., and partake of their champagne, churros... and a Mojito, before bopping a bit to some Regeatton and jumping on bike when had enough to negotiate way through thankfully thining crowds.

Obviously I need to think away the struggle through the crowds to cross from Le Paquis earlier in the evening, the friends I did not manage to hook up, despite the number of SMS' flying around

And today, as I take a break from a Sunday of work, will stroll down to try and finally find the pictures of Moscow, confident that I know exactly where my favourite Quesadilla stand will be waiting for me.... Sorry that I missed the Ella Fitzgerald stage performance on Friday night...

What an excellent memorable portrait of you Nir!!

Just kidding...

I think that we forget what we have, if we will complain about every part of what there is available. Sure parts are commercial, for those with kids it is entertainment for certain days of Summer for children....there is a whole load of world to explore for those here...cost effective as well as heavy investments for those who have it...

In the parity of life, we see diversity in the lives we lead...let us be led by living than by our work...in India and some other 3rd world nations there is no equality and certainly no vacation time or downtime....enjoyment is in the basic necessities of life...like eating and drinking the fundamentals of nurture...and nourishment...

I see greater joy in the many hues of the trees that dance or sway within the zephyrs of thoughts...in reflections of the cumulus magical clouds that are higher still closer to the mountain ranges of our dreams....the more awake we are the more we appreciate what there is..in the many many choices even here in Geneva.

I enjoyed the festivities...it is one of many choices of things to partake in, next year I am sure I will chose it again...eventually as I grow old of it, I will look deeper still into the nature that I find worthwhile and heritage of history within our neighbours in Europe...

Best wishes to you Nir and the family,

Niaz

I would have to totally agree with Nir!

I found it to be like the festivals in America that I'm so sick of: chinese/indian food stands everywhere, noisy rides, smelly garbage, average music, weird people etc. Also it is completely not a representation of Geneva.

I personally love Geneva for all that it is, but Fetes de Geneve is so not Geneva! Geneva is Bains des Paquis, La Terrace, Ile d'Rousseu, Fetes des Musique, Parc des Bastions, Lac Leman etc. chill, cool, cultured.. not noicy, roudy, smelly..

I mean I don't want to bash Fetes de Geneve completely. It's kinda fun, good to stumble through when you're a bit drunk or if you want to pump up your adrenaline on the rides BUT it's definetly not the highlight of the year. At least now I know, when I move back to Geneva, I won't hesitate to take a vacation during Fetes de Geneve.

Moonflit,

You said: "...unless ur homosexual or Bisexual man, which is virtually no one on this site...".

Not true my friend. Whatever is the % of gay / bisexual men in the general population, it's likely to be the same on glocals. And like outside of glocals, some gay / bi-sexual men on glocals are open about it, some ain't.

If you'd like to do something together with any specific group on glocals, just post it on the Member-Activities section, and if the activity is good - you'll likely get lots of replies.

Fireworks were a bit long, yeah, specially for a very silly person like me that stayed jammed in the middle of the bridge with my folks :) But oh how beautiful!!!!!!!!!

I think it's great to see so many people outside. It only shows one thing: Geneva needs places that not too expensive, VIP and all that shit, with some good music, where people can meet and have fun. Fetes de Geneve is just there, so everybody goes there!!!! Dahhhh...:P

Next year, I'm booking a hotel suite to watch the fireworks ;) if we are 20 sharing it, and we manage to smuggle in something to eat and drink, we're good!!!!!!! :hehe:

Interesting point about the fete being overated... here is my opinion:

1. Geneva could do a lot better in organising this fete and make it oustanding and world class (such as geneva brand is)

2. The fun fares are all old to very old mainly junk.. which is also expensive to have a ride on

3. I remember the competition fireworks.. which they do not do...anymore

4. The person who has been organizing the fetes has been there for many years and has lost new ideas new innovations.... replace him

Get the GenevaOnline team in... into organizing the fetes to improve the following:

1. Have rollercoaster rides which are exciting to be on.... (only allow the best to come to geneva)

2. Get the latest rollercoasters in the aspects of having them launch the best/latest/newest here in geneva

3. Get real serious sponserships/partner into the fetes. They only have few partners and therefore the budget is missing.... for worldwide marketing, promoting get the right people onboard

4. have fireworks competition: get the best teams from around the world... give them a prize money (sponsered by a partner)

Again the fetes de geneve has shown that there is a potenitial to make it world class, but this can only be achieved by having a world class team running it.

Any comments feel free to post them here or to me pmh69@hotmail.com

Always happy to compile them and then send them on to the head of canton geneva... Pierre-François Unger

Hey guys, GE is better than the 'cemetary w traffic lights' where I live, which only comes alive for 2 weeks of the year - and if you live here, you don't want to hang around when it does... Montreux.

I do agree (with initial thesis).

1) There's  money- and where's inspiration? We start smell that as much money is out there- no better the "wealth" is, is that the taste or organisation missing? Or will for life?

2)Money has nothing to do with it at all- an old trick: "We need budget money for doing things for free", or even "we add them to the money recovered from the event" (I am some kind of an accountant or analyst for costs).

3) Where is the next gay/"poor"/alternative party? LET ME KNOW!!! (I know Grottes already)
