Health Insurance in Switzerland (international v/s local companies)

Dear all,

I need to get health insurance in Switzerland and I have the option of getting an expat insurance (for example with Cigna, also known as Van Breda), or a local Swiss insurance company. Does anyone have an idea which would be a better option?

Any suggestions and/or recommendations would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance and best wishes for the New Year!

Annie

Hello,

You can have a look on comparis.ch for swiss health insurance and you can take the less expensive because they provide the same basic insurance.

However I don't have any idea about the expat insurance :)

If you want more information about the swiss health insurance, tell me :)

Cheers,

Jeremy.

Hi Annie!

First of all my advice would be to make sure you really have the choice to take an expat insurance instead of a swiss one  because, most of the time, as soon as you live in switzerland, you have to choose a swiss local insurance company at least for the Lamal basic health insurance...

Regards

I have been just told by SAM staff (!) that residents with cart de legitimation were exempt from mandatory swiss/cantonal health insurance. Could anybody refer me to the official document, please?

Hi,

legitimation card holders, are indeed excempt from swiss mandatory insurance system.

Most of my expat customers (glocals included) with legitimation card go through international health insurances as they can get better covers and conditions for the same price or less.

At your disposal if you need further info.

Reviving this thread...

I am a short term (e.g. 3-6mo) consultant...would prefer a expat insurance (e.g. Bupa? Cigna) to the a Swiss company. But i received a letter from the Genva authorities requesting i sign up with one of the approved swiss options.

How does one submit to the canton a request for exemption?

Is there a liklihood that someone here just short term and covered by expat policy could be exempted?

Hi,

Have a look at a FAQ document published by the Federal Office of Public Health thttp://www.bag.admin.ch/themen/krankenversicherung/06377/index.html?lang=en&download=NHzLpZeg7t,lnp6I0NTU042l2Z6ln1ad1IZn4Z2qZpnO2Yuq2Z6gpJCKdn18gWym162epYbg2c_JjKbNoKSn6A-- .

Point 4 mentions possible exemptions. As independent consultant residing even for a short time here you’ll very likely be obliged to contract Swiss health coverage.

You can still try to ask for an exemption to:

DEAS - DGAS - Service de l'assurance-maladie

Route de Frontenex 62

1207 Genève

http://www.ge.ch/assurances/maladie/principes-base.asp

In case you obtain such an exemption I would be highly interested to know – good luck!
