My Mac shows "the disk is not readable" when I insert the USB key. Trying to recover the data, used a few online data recovery tools, but so far no success. Would be grateful to have an advice.

maybe it was formated as NTFS????(on a Windows machine?)
online data recovery tools cannot do anything if the usb key is not readable (as stated by the mac OS).
give it a try in a normal windows machine to see if the key can be read....

Try Recuva (http://www.piriform.com/recuva) in Windows.
Hey,
If you know someone who has a GNU/Linux OS based machine. It could be helpful too.
Cheers !

If the key has a serious issue, such as it being materially broken or otherwise unreadable, the only remaining solution would be to bring it to a specialist.
I've had to do so one time at work. i went to TechHelp (I picked this shop more or less at random), 59 Rue du 31 decembre 59. They managed to get all the info back from a fautly hard drive.
However this is expensive. A quote would cost you 100chf and take prob a couple of days, because they have to examine the problem and this already takes some effort. Then they would suggest various solutions according to what the issue is. In the most extreme cases it can cost 2 or 3 thousand, with the device being sent to a lab to try to piece back the info together.
It depends how much the lost info is worth to you.
