Job Websites

Hey guys

I'm new to the site and to Geneva, i'm wondering if perhaps i could get a little bit of advice from you.

Could anyone tell me if there are any financial jobsites specific to Geneva or if its worth just going with Reed or Monster?

Thanks in advance

James

Hello All,

Just wondering, if it's possible to get a job with work permit sponsorship?

Any advise would be highly appreciated.

Yeah, that is called

Permit L (3-12 month limited)

Permit B (renewable 12months)

an employer just needs to apply and you must wait and hope for success.

Thanks for your response. But I'm afraid no employer is willing to apply. Thats the problem. I applied for several jobs but the replied asking work permit and without that they cann't consider me. So I'm so disappointed. What can be done? Any advise.

Well that is the problem, if an employer does not want to apply for a permit for you, you might consider applying to get a Schengen passport, i think this gives some rights.

If European passport holder, then you have some rights to work in Europe.

But other countries like the USA, China, India, Brazil nationals, have to get a sponsor 'normally'.

about an employer , if they really want you, they would apply and wait, but most prefer you already have a B permit, because it is much easier or almost guaranteed to get it renewed. And because of treaties and quotas, I think your from Indian subcontinent, you really must find an employer to 'make the effort to apply for your permit, but no guarantees. And that is no different for any countries outside the EU, including those Americans, even thought they are everywhere, its because of all the American companies got alot of 'Allowances' to apply for permits for there american 'so called' managers that are necessary to keep the 'Tax preferential relavance/tax jusification'.

If you find Indian, Brazilian, Russion, etc companies in Geneva, they have some quotas that allow senior managers to more easily obtain working permits or residence permits.

*****disclamer :I am a Financial controll and not legal advisor or even not an advisor in anyway , so see with a swiss legal immigration specialist, good luck.

Go back to where you came from and look for a job there.  The job market in Switzerland is saturated and very competitive.  If you don't have a work permit already that would be extra cost and paperwork for the employer.  You would have to be cheap enough and have some critical skills for them to consider you.

Good luck

It is true that if you do not have working permit in Switzerland, the employer do not even take time to ask for it... It is more or less the first requirement to have. Do not forget that Switzerland is very conservative. It is not like USA where they do not care where you are from. Employers love to be impress by the schools, experience that you had. It is true that it is very competitive and not speaking French can be sometimes a big handicap.

Yes I would say so.  My experience is you need to meet them so you understand each other.  They probably get hundreds if not thousands of CVs.  So unless your applying for a specific job they probably just register your details and forget you unless you flag in a search.  At least if they meet you hear your story you may be in there mind for up and coming positions

Actually the best way is to have a contact passed to you by a friend/colleague, then they are even more likely to work for you.

Thanks a million for your valuable advice. It's really helpful and hope to get something soon. I think that my background in IT management could help me to buy the potential employer for work permit.

Please, what do you mean by “help me to buy the potential employer to get me a work permit”?

In CH, work permits aren’t bought or sold, they are granted, the criteria usually being that the applicant has skills and experience that can’t otherwise be found.

@ ritchie. They are granted for UE citiziens. It is the law. If you are not UE, the employers need to go through lots of harrassement. Except if you are someone important or very special, they won't even try.

Now this is what is behind => Being an employer, I need to hire someone. What is happening = > after receiving hundreds of CV, well you have lots of choice and believe me you receive a lot ....  What do they do my colleagues??? they all retain CV where you can read : B Permit, C permit, G permit or Swiss Citizen. They do not even take the time to read others CV.... It is sad but right now it is the jungle... And going worst, they even check that the person is established in Geneva or In Vaud for some of my colleagues... But this is more related to banking sector where they want you to live in Switzerland only

Thank you for giving an interesting glimpse of the other side of the job market.

What really concerned me in the previous post was the use of the word “buy”, which gives a most unfortunate impression.

Hi Richtie,

I'm sorry but I guess you took that word in wrong way. What people mean in Banking sector by saying "buy the potential employer" means that you could be successful in convincing the employer to apply work permit for you.

This is what I wanted to say. Of course I know that work permit can't be bought. I hope I made myself clear now.

Sorry for that.

@All,

Also if anyone could advise on below, would be great.

Do these international organizations like IATA, IFRC, GAIN have some kind of quota system for work permit? They don't have to go through usual process for short term work permit for a staff with Switzerland government because they've some kind of agreement

It’s curious how obtuse one can be at times, but as a mere pleb banking really is a bit beyond my ken.

Hi Sandeep,

International Organizations are not subject to Swiss immigration quotas.  However, they (such as CERN) might have other internal criteria/quotas.

Also, when they hire you, you don't get a Swiss permit but a carte de légitimation which is valid as long as you stay employed in the same International Organization.

Good luck!

Hi,

Thanks for this information. So in that case one doesn't get any work permit. That means one can't even change the job...right? This work permit is only applicable to private sector.

Private or public sector (for instance, you could work for the Canton de Genève).

When you work for an International Organization (and have the status of international civil servant), you get a carte de légitimation.  And yes, if you quit the Int Org you lose the status and the carte.

Thanks for your advise. One more thing - for instance I'm willing to apply for internship with IATA ( International Air Transport Association). So which one would I need - Work permit or carte de légitimation? Any idea?

A work permit can't be bought?  Well who knows, where there's a will, there's always a way, and it also depends on who you know!!  :)  :)   Not to say that it happens though, but I can't say it doesn't happen either.
