dental and optical costs in Switzerland

Hello guys,

Appology if similar thread already exists but didn't find anything thatwould answer my questions.

Currently im wearing glasses but would like toget lenses too. Never wore them before so no idea about the costs. Im wondering to go to visilab to have a consultation and purchases lenses. Any idea how much that would approximately cost? Btw, do I need a prescribtion from the doctor first?

Another thing is placing of the dental crown. Anybody who had it done in Switzerland? i know the costs culd be high but it would help if you could give approximation of high much CHF?

many thanks!

Re: dental and optical costs in Switzerland

Hi Olga

Re glasses and lenses - shop around first as opticians are doing more and more deals these days, as the competition increases, so first find one who'll give you the best deal.

You will need to get an eye test/prescription (from an optician - not a doctor!) as the prescription for lenses is different to your glasses.  Also ask to have a trial period for the lenses as you don't want to buy a load and end up hating them.

(I've tried and tried with lenses and I just cannot get my head round sticking something in my eye, so they're not for everyone.....).

With regard to dentists - I paid CHF1200 for a inlay (a sort of half way house between a filling and a crown) at a private dentists in Nyon, only to find it was so rubbish, my regular (UK) dentist ended up removing it and putting a crown on.

(Can't beleive I'm telling the world about my oral problems!!)

However, all the advice previously given on these forums is to go to France for the dentist.  They're way cheaper and, in general, seem to be better quality.  Apparantley there are several good ones in Divonne.

As a (Swiss) friend told me - the Swiss make the best dental instruments in the world - they just don't make the best dentists.

thanks, Carolyn. I was thinking to see a dentist in Germany as apparently its way better than local one here but unfortunately my dental insurance only covers a Swiss one and again, only like 60%. Thus my question about the cost estimate for crown.

Then again, last year I went to do my wisdom tooth removal in Swiss, and I cant complain! Went smoothly and end up paying only 100CHF by myself, the rest covered by insurance.

As for lenses, Im usually quite good with glasses but just wanted to get lenses for special occasions. so def would not wear them everyday. How much would be the eye test?

thanks!

A crown in France usually costs 400-800 euros, depending on the dentist and the tooth. I was quoted 650 for a pre-molar. The costs of check-ups and medically necessary treatments are much cheaper. A root canal costs 90 euros.

Naturally the costs are much higher in Switzerland. But it might be worth it if your French is not good, I can recommend a good dentist here, if you need. I was quoted around 1500 for a crown here. Also factor in the time you'll spend travelling across the border for treatment, rather than popping in somewhere local. I've seen two dentists in France, one good and one awful. The only dentist I saw in Switzerlnd was great, ignore the generalizations.

i had an eye test last year here in Fribourg and it cost me 90 chf.  I use contacts on a daily basis and i get my contacts online through a US retailer.....but it can be a bit of a hastle.  If its your first time getting contacts its better to get them directly from the optition since they need to be fitted anyway.  he will get you a pair first so you can try and see if any adjustments need to be done.  thn once you have the propper fot you can by monthly disposables or whatever you need according to your prescription.  For solution I recommend OptiFree although it is quite expensive for the bigger bottle at 22 chf.

As far as dental.... if insurance wont cover it, then go to Hungary.  They seem to offer good deals for medical tourism, and they seem to specialize in dental work Sealed  i think you can take a cheap flight from BSL or GVA

Well, I am among the one who gave the advice to go to french dentists. And I was rather happy of mine (but she's now working in switzerland).

But honestly, to have friends and client that are dentist... no, the overall quality is not higher in France, it would rather be the opposite.

Regarding Hungary, I don't think it's such a good advice, except if the person has really a lot of things to do, lot of time, no way to do anything else. I read some stories of things going badly, and it means you end up with a local doctor anyway.

for glasses, I usually go to visilab, but only because I usually don't want to wait and they do glasses quickly. You don't need to see an optician first, I think they charge you like 40 francs for a consultation but you can usually make them remove that from the bill, they have some margin. I think fieldman is ok and cheaper.

For dental going to Hungary would be a good option. RemeyS i have herd of horror stories about a lot of place and things. I usually do no make judgements on things unless i  have experienced it. Olga just like the many people on this site from different parts of the world you can ask for recomendations from Hungarians on here and perhaps consider it. Unless you want to pay a Swiss dentist to do the same work for 20 times more....Good luck Smile

Try this dentist..I have just been for a root canal, full check and 2 fillings for 650CHF. I thought that was good value with the effort they put in.

I also go to Cressida, am quite happy with her, only downside is that she is working alone and not that many hours so not convenient in case of emergency etc.

I don't know how to start a new thread, so I'm posing this related question here..

Is it normal practice that a receptionist refuses to give a price over the telephone for a consultation / examination? They advised me that their prices are in accordance with TarMed, but I am unable to find any TarMed pricing guidelines online.

The clinic in question is an optical centre, the only one who answered my call. The HUG clinic charge around 90 CHF for an examination, but have no appointments left in 2014. I feel somewhat open to exploitation attending an appointment with no idea of the potential cost. With a large insurance franchise, I'm effectively paying these costs directly.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Maybe your medical insurance company could give you a guideline?

Best, R.

Thanks Ritchie. That sounds like a very sensible idea, but I've been mis advised by them many times regarding their own services. I'm not confident that they could advise me on this, though I'm sure they'd be happy to keep me on hold on their premium rate telephone service for 20 minutes to try to help ;-)

привет,

Dont know about dentists but expert in daily usage lenses as I wear them for football matches.

Simply (from my exp.), 1)Alain Affelelou is the one to go to, either with your prescription or get one there for 30 chf.

2) Ask for the free trial lenses first, a pack of 10 or something like that..

3) Try them (suffer the procedure of deliberately poking and touching your eyeball)

4) Order, then, the lenses you'd like. (Cheapest is 30 chf) I get johnson & johnson (40 chf) a pack of 30 lenses.

Finally, keep in mind that wearing them gets easier after the first 20 times or so.. =)
