Yes, that can be very normal under certain conditions. Many people have their own dietary preferances & it can be quite a daunting task to ensure everyone (that one sometimes doesn't even know well enough) is happy, when the idea is only to faire connaissance, exchange ideas & culture (and food, sometimes).

I've also happened to come across such a gathering of about a five or six locals once in Versoix, where I was just passing by; happened to chat with a cpl of them & they were all more than glad to share all they were drinking & eating.

I have also noticed that the locals can go to great lengths to please if they do invite anyone home for a meal or even an apéro. Except, they believe it's a special degree of friendship one has to earn. How does one get there? Here's an idea...go to BYOB & Food BBQs...

Kyle, Swiss mating rituals seem to be limited to social circles (ie. friend of a friend, friend of a relative, friend of a colleague, relative of a colleague, etc).  Opening a conversation with a girl on the street is almost never done here.  When you do, it's usually a very formal and stiff conversation.  Not like the UK, unfortunately...

I agree that some of the comments here can be regarded as misogynistic, lewd and somewhat anti-swiss, but it's going both ways (anti-american & misandrist). Okay so I see now that I am a bit late, but being American obviously this thread caught my attention.  It took a turn for the worst at times, but overall I am a bit upset to see that so many people view us as just plain stupid.  I know these stereotypes exist, but so overtly is a little discouraging because there are so many beautiful (in and out) American women that should be part of this discussion.  

If you want my honest opinion, an opinion which has been mirrored by men and women alike from all over the world, American girls are AMAZING.  American girls are funny, they dont take themselves too seriously and they know how to take a joke, (unlike many).   They are generally outgoing/outspoken, caring, and incredibly smart.  Of course, like any culture, there are those people who give us the "dumb blonde" expression, but as whole American women are not like this.  Dont be dillusional.  

Sorry for the rant.  I am normally not the PRO AMERICAN type, but I guess when you start making assumptions about people like my sister, my mother, grandmother, friends, cousins, etc...I switch to defense mode, another positive attribute: loyalty.     : )

Hi Danielle, I understand your feeling, hearing people making stereotypes can be irritating and frustrating... a lot of people do believe in stereotypes because it comforts them to be able to put other people in boxes, it is reassuring because that way it makes them feel that they can explain people's behaviours and it is easy 'cause they don't have to think much and look at what is beyond each person... unfortunately I think that we've all been lazy and fallen into it at least once in our life... and I certainly don't feel proud to admit it.

At long last an open minded person.
