If you are looking for a bed for just a few years, then Ikea, or the likes..
If you are looking for a high quality pocket spring bed to last many years, then www.superiorbeds.ch

I should add a disclosure to my previous post above, I am part owner of Superior Beds. We set up when I tried to buy a "decent" bed in Switzerland, but discovered that "decent" beds come at a pretty hefty price. We therefore created SB to offer expats the chance to buy a decent english pocket spring bed for a very reasonable price. These are longer term investments, and not probably not worth buying if you are going to only use it for a few years before moving on again.
As I have learnt quite a bit about beds over the last few years, I am more than happy to help and advise anyone regarding a new bed (or their current bed!) whether they are looking for the types we sell (Divan + pocket spring mattress), or not. Please feel free to ask for friendly advice.

Hi Sari,
Essentially there are three main types of mattresses avaliable - foam, latex and spring.
Foams have developed from the very cheap "sponge" to quite high tech X zone memory foams, etc. As have latex mattresses. Latex is a natural product, so is better (in my opinion) than any foam. However, it does cause your body to sweat out more through the night, so its not great for breatheability. Most people find latex quite comfortable though.
Spring beds are where there are lots of metal coils inside the mattress. Nowadays, the higher quality ones have pocket springs, so each spring is encased in its own pocket, then all pockets are placed together to create a mattress. The idea is that becuase the pocket springs are not (properly) attached to each other, when one is compressed (when you lie on it), the spring beside it should not react as they are not joined. This means that when you turn over during the night, your partner will not feel your movements, and hence not get disturbed. Now, on top of the pocket springs, you should look for good quality natural and breatheable materials - such as lambswool, cashmere, etc. Horse's hair is the best material - it is very spring like too, as well as being breatheable and natural, but its the most expensive to use.
100% natural products in your mattress means that you shouldn't get hot or cold during the night and will not leave you waking up in a puddle of moisture!
When looking for a bed, you should first decide what your budget is, what type of bed you want, what size your room can accomodate, then look for more specifics.
You can also compare your new mattress to cars - sometimes easier to understand - what kind of car do you want, can afford, need, etc. Some people want an Aston Martin but can't afford it, some people are happy with a Ford Escort, etc.
Given that you will spend a third of your life in your new bed, and it will help you replenish your energy for the next day ahead, don't scrimp on it and cut corners. It should be treated as an important investment in your life for the next 10-15 years.
Regards,
Chris
