Buying a car
Hi,

Please help I am confused and not sure where to find info.

I am looking to buy a car here in Switzerland. Currently I hold a UK driving license. Do I need to exchange this for a swiss or international one before purchasing a car???

Any other tips and hints about buyng a car here are welcome.

Thanks,

Leila

i think that for the first year living in Geneva you can drive using your UK licence. I would recommend exchange it though for a swiss one. You can do this in the first year without taking a swiss driving test. Anyone knows where they do the exchange?

As far as I know, you don't need a license to buy a car, You need a license to *drive* one! The office cantonal des automobiles et de la navigation is the place to ask.

For requesting a Swiss driverslicense you go to the address below. Before you go you need to have your eyes tested. This form you can download from internet, in my case my optical had the form. The test costed me 20 CHF and takes 5 to 10 minutes. Reserve atleast an hour when you go to the Service des Automobiles, its mostly crowded.

Service des automobiles et de la navigation
