Disposing of dead electronics

Alright, I nearly put the apartment on fire. Woke up in the middle of the night (after I fell asleep on the couch) to see smoke coming out of my dvd/dvr player thingie. No fire, no damage, except the dead piece of electronic. Now, what do I do with it? Can I just put it in the communal trash or is there a special place to take it to?

Thanks in advance for the help.
