Edward Snowden

Did anyone on here know him?  I never met him during my time in Geneva from 2008 - 2010?  It sounds like he was working for the US Government CIA starting from 2007 - and even talks about getting a Swiss Banker drunk and arrested to help the USA gain banking leverage on a certain Swiss bank.

Quote:

He described as formative an incident in which he claimed CIA operatives were attempting to recruit a Swiss banker to obtain secret banking information. Snowden said they achieved this by purposely getting the banker drunk and encouraging him to drive home in his car. When the banker was arrested for drunk driving, the undercover agent seeking to befriend him offered to help, and a bond was formed that led to successful recruitment.

"Much of what I saw in Geneva really disillusioned me about how my government functions and what its impact is in the world," he says. "I realised that I was part of something that was doing far more harm than good."

I was not in the same city as him during that period but I think I am in the same city as him now.  It is not clear from the reports thought that the secret information was sought to help the US gain banking leverage (am not sure if that is within the scope of work of the CIA)?

The interesting thing about Snowden is he seemed to like the idea of walking into hornets nests. Before his work with the CIA he joined the US Military post-Iraq War.

I knew a lot of guys in IT Security that got asked by US Gov agenecies to come work for them after 9/11. They got the Patriotic Act and it was obvious they planned to take their right to expand their agencies as far as possible. But all my friends knew it would put them in situations they didnt really want to be in, and not be especially well compensated for it. So they avoided it. They got into this work to get away from being micro-managed, not to go head first into it!
