If you are still having trouble, here are some recommendations:
1.) utilize the classifieds section of glocals. unfortunately, if you don't have a steady paycheck or a Swiss citizen to guarantee your rent for you, you can't deal with Regies, the private businesses that own most of the apartments here. you will need to look for sublets, and glocals is the best place to find it (I found mine here!)
2.) try www.easywg.ch/ even though it usually has more spammers. it's a site dedicated to helping people find colocators, which is what you would be doing
3.) your university should have a "logement" service to help you find housing. people post their rooms on the university's website in the hopes of attracting a student. you will need to file an application with your university's department that takes care of the logement. also, they usually give preference to first year students, so you'll be luckier to find something there.
Just another thing from personal experience, also. Beware of people offering over 1000.-/mo or more for a room outside of Geneva commune. There is a terrible problem with price gouging on subletters (I have been the victim of this already, in Meyrin, and to some of my other friends.)
You should also lower your expectations; you will not be able to find a furnished or even an unfurnished studio or 1BR for sublet for less than 1500.-/mo. If you do, it's probably a Regie lease, which is conditional on the above statement I made. Be true to your budget, and expect to live with at least one other person in a shared apartment.
Best of luck!
