Hi ya,

as far as i know there are plenty of courses around...some more expensive than others but to be honest i do believe the best way to learn a language is by speaking to people. Where abouts are you in switzerland?

I'm not an expert in language-learning - but IMO it only makes sense to start to speak to native-speakers, once you have a certain base-level knowledge.

Learning German will require a certain amount of "Sitzfleisch", as we say in Germany.

There will be times when you want to burn your books ;-)

Of course, on all Glocals-events and Meetups, everybody talks English, which really doesn't help those (few) who actually want to learn German, in a city where the native-speakers speak a dialect that makes it nearly impossible to understand the language for a non-native-speaker....

If you actually want to meet (high-)German-speaking people in Zurich (apart from the few on the meetup), there's this group on Xing:

https://www.xing.com/net/zurich/

They do their own meetings, from time to time - though I must admit I have not joined one, lately.

Regards,

Rainer

thanks a lot for your input....i completely agree that the best way to learn a language is to start speaking to people....the only problem is I don't know many locals here, and I guess at the meetings, people will anyways speak english, as they all are new here too....so i guess i'll have to join some classes later on, or will look for someone who is kind enough to teach me some basics....and i can teach him/her some good english in return....but i m positive something good will workout....but thanks once again...appreciate your help

just check the courses around

Migros Klubschule/Ècole-Club/Scuola Club might be a first place to check, it is widespread and quite cheap

if you have some relation to some university, you might even have a free course

i also recommend to hurry, because most of the courses will start in a short time

For learning basics there is also ifage next to Place d'Augustines, Carouge

They have various language courses, both intensive and standard running between a month and 3 months and have a good reputation

For German courses

http://ifage.ch/cours/horaires.php?domId=19&sSectId=§Id=&change=yes&tri=yes&order=date&dir=asc
