Problem with Hallux Valgus - Anyone can recommend a good doctor / hospital in Geneva or France?

I have a serious problem for many years called 'Hallux Valgus' which amazingly bothers my life and gets worse and worse on the foot. I have search various informations and solution but do not know how to start the first step in Geneva.

Does anyone have any experiences in Geneva / France to advise the doctor or the hospital, as i know there are some solutions and doctor may use differently to do the surgery. If it is necessary to do the surgery, how much does it cost approximately? Would that be with Specialist only or in a hospital?

Thank you very much for any comments and experience to share.

I cannot advice you on your questions. But you should know that this type of problem originates from the wearing of Western shoestyles. Too short and/or pointed shoes. An operation alone will not save you from future problems. You have to totally change your footwear philosophy and put your feet in centrum and no more your eyes.

The problem is not caused solely by fancy footwear.  There can be a  genetic weakness of the joint  although I do agree that sacrificing comfort for fashion all day and every day is sheer folly – but then so are many of the other things we do.

my mum and my aunt had this problem a few years ago.

My aunt did nothing and had to have a surgery about it, and still has some pains.

My mum put some green clay on it, for some days. Never needed to do something else.

How Important Are Shoes?
It's difficult to know exactly how important footwear is in the development of bunions, but it is the only variable that can be significantly controlled. Bunions are much less common in countries without Western footwear. Bunions occur in non-Western countries in about 3% of the population. In countries with Western footwear, the prevalence of bunions is over 30%. In countries where Western footwear has been introduced recently, the prevalence of bunions has risen to coincide with rates seen in Western countries.

The french term for the foot doctor is "podologue"  and  for suggestions NOT to go immediately to surgery please consider such actions  if you have not done it yet:

Do not wear high heeled shoes (above 3 centimeters) and avoid pointy shoes which increase the bunion/ hallus valgus phenomenon,

If needed, consider losing weight if this applies to your case

Be ready to wear corrective inner soles in your shoes.  Very likely your insurance will refund all or part of the purchase. In addition, a specific widening separator (between big toe  and 2nd toe) would also bring relief and correction, but it is to your full expense.

Thank you Ritchie for understanding me, never ever I have worn any fancy shoes for 20 years, it was completely herited from my grandmother and my mother. Only to the woman. I have studied many information and tried all different physical means to improve the situation, in vain.

i have never been to the doctor's for this problem, and thought as what my mother did in her life, that it is just part of the life, however I have now the problem getting worse and worse, pain during the day without even walking or wearing any shoes...

as you correctly advised I will see the doctor for an X ray first to see how she comment on a surgery or not.

Thank you Milord for your consideration, yes I fully agree not to jump immediately to the solution of a surgery, however i have tried all above you have mentioned, my shoes FYI have never any heel at all, as i could simply just not wear it even if with 3 cm heel. And I am getting more and more pikcy when buying shoes, and 99% of the shoes in the shops do not fit me at all. My current ones are dedicated from a local Japanese brand imported with extremely light weight and no heel.

Yes, including the stuff to widening the first and 2nd toes which you correctly advised, but it does not help a lot.

I wonder if anyone who has experienced the conversation with doctors in Geneva, or surgery on this for the same problem. Thanks to everyone!

Hi Jessica,

I think it is better to go for surgery if it is too painful or if you can no longer find shoes which suit you. There are several good surgeons in Geneva - and it is reimbursed by your health Swiss insurrance if you go to the HUG  (assurance de base). If you have a private insurrance which covers private clinics, you can contact the Clinique Generale Beaulieu for example or Clinique des Grangettes. What kind of insurrance do you have?

Good luck

Hi Jessica,

I found your post looking for the same answer as yours. I have a few friends who had the same problem. They have been operated by Dr  Ray, chief of foot surgery in the Universitary Hospital of Geneva. For what I know, he is using a very modern technique and they are all very happy. They have very small scares (like 1 cm) and didn't really complained about pain.

I hope it may help you. I personnally will try to get an appointment and see

Good luck
