Renting apartments up front

Hi all,

My first post here Cool Nice to e-meet you all. Excited to see you have drinks occasionally, hope I can join!

I'm coming over to Geneva from London in mid-May to work full-time. I've searched this forum for apartment-hunting tips and done my fair share of Googling (to the point where £2000 rents now seem almost reasonable...) but I'm wondering if anybody has any advice on how I might go about renting somewhere BEFORE my arrival?

Should I just book an Airbnb for the first week or so, and do my (more long-term) apartment hunting once I'm there? Or is it possible to rent somewhere up front by using websites like this one, or Immostreet or Homegate? (and if so, what documents should I be sending/requesting from my employer?) Obviously, I don't want to get scammed or rent somewhere that is awful when I arrive!

Sorry, I'm sure this all seems like ABC to lots of you, but I have to confess I'm completely new to Switzerland and a lot of the information out there is quite confusing and/or for people who are from outside the EU.

Any words of advice much appreciated! Thank you :)

You can see if any student rooms are available at the uni.  This is a good short term bet

May is still kinda very term time so not sure on your luck.

Glocals, or www.wgzimmer.ch are good for finding rooms, short and long term lets

Technically, the regies (estate agencies) won't let you rent a place without having seen it.

Geneva is small, but has fairly distinct neighborhoods with different vibes - unless you know Geneva well already, I would start with AirBnB until you get a feel for where you'd like to live. Keep in mind, though, the market is very competitive and it can take several months sometimes to get accepted for a place. If you're looking at spending 1500-2000£, you're in the most competitive category and can be fighting 25 or more people for just average flats.

I would help you if you search in Lausanne!

I agree with Matt that it's better if you start with AirBnB and after you start searching for long term contract.
