does anyone know if its possible to lease/ hire a car for a relatively short period of time?
3 - 6 months? maybe a bit longer....

I've been looking into the exact same thing and you need two websites to get as far as I've got.
www.mobility.ch and www.patricklocation.ch
I haven't spoken to either of them yet. Just made on-line enquiries. Looks like Patrick Locations is cheapest. They have, for example, a 3 door economy car for 520chf a month if you do within 1,500km in that month.
If you get better than that, please let me know!

If interested you can buy my car around same costs... I'm leaving so unfortunately I need to sell it.... It's a nice cabriolet 306 peugeot at 110K km , and I am only asking CHF 3,400 .. + 4 brand new snow tyres included
