Web scammer arrested

GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – The first of August national holiday in western Switzerland was marred by serious road accidents,  assaults and drunken driving. A man was arrested in Geneva for several web scams, some of them on English-language social network glocals.com, that involved taking down payments for an apartment that was supposedly for rent.

Police in Geneva arrested the French man, age 35, Tuesday 31 July after numerous complaints against him amounting to what the man says was a CHF63,000 scam, since February 2012, using mainly Internet sites www.anibis.ch and www.glocals.ch to rent an apartment at 3, rue Samuel-Constant in Geneva. A warrant was issued for his arrest 30 July and police caught him as he was coming to Geneva to show the apartment to a man from Mulhouse, France.

He admitted the scam, and told police it began when he found himself in financial trouble, at which point he moved to canton Vaud.

Police in Geneva are seeking other victims of the scam. They are asked to phone +41 22 427 7260 Monday to Friday from 08h00-12h00 and 14h00-18h00.

Oh, i forget to say, Gerard, thanks for the information and I hope others will at least learn about this guy and feel a bit better that he was caught.

Thank goodness. I heard few days ago that one of my friend's friend had lost 2 months advance amount to some guy who run awy after accumulating money from various ppl.

We just had another guy post an apt to rent on glocals on the same address with a similar ad to last time. I think the scammer may be back. We blocked his account and reported it to the police.

Ce n’est pas tout. En quelques mois, en 2012, C. se serait fait remettre près de 120 000 fr. par des personnes désirant louer son appartement en Ville. Or, ce logement était entre les mains… de l’Office des poursuites. «Il a tablé sur l’état sinistré du marché du logement, indique l’acte d’accusation. Ces personnes, des expatriés, des habitants d’autres cantons, des étudiants, étaient non coutumières de l’environnement locatif genevois.»


Elles ont versé de l’argent «avant la prétendue remise des locaux» en guise de caution.
