Who is interested in Sailing lessons?

I'm thinking of giving sailing lessons this season in Geneva.

It all depends on how many people would be interested. I noticed that the demand for such classes (especially in English) is quite high, and that the offer cannot really match it.

I have a 32 ft sailboat (9.8 m) at "La Nautique" (next to Geneve Plage) and usually go out sailing in the evenings after work and on weekends for pleasure. This year I would like to do a bit more and offer sailing lessons to beginners and intermediates. These classes would be 2 hours long (I'm flexible of course), in the evening on weekdays, and during the day on weekends when I'm not racing. In French or in English. I will align the price to what other commercial schools charge: 75.-/h for private lessons, 55.- p.p. in groups.

So would you be interested in such classes? Please let me know by replying on this forum or contacting me directly. [email protected] 079-615-7030

Do you require a different format? I'm open to suggestions.

A bit about me: I'm Swiss (from Geneva), 36 y.o, bilingual French/English, and have been attending Sindy and Glocals events since 2000. I understand the expat/international mindset of Glocal members and their needs, and like to help out by sharing my knowledge if I can. I have been sailing all my life, mostly on Lake Geneva, but increasingly more out at sea. I not only hold the Swiss lake permit (sail and motor), but also the Swiss sea license. I love to race sailboats (Surprise, Grand-Surprise) but also to cruise leisurely and enjoy life. I have taught sailing to kids in Cape Cod and Boston, but also to adults. Last year (2009) I co-organized evening sailing-swimming-apero activities with "JamesBB" here on Glocals. It was quite a success (will do it again this year).

Looking forward to seeing you on the water!

I'd be interested in the weekends, but weekdays might be hard. Would it be open to women too?

Alright! When would first lesson be? Are you waiting until there are a group of interested people or should we call you individually? By the way, je pourrais eventuellement faire en francais aussi, si vous ou le groupe prefere. Comme je ne connais rien dans la voile, ca serait egal en francais et en anglais.

What a great idea!!! I would so be interested, and have been waiting for an opportunity to sail again for a long while, however, typical really, when the opportunity comes, i am just recovering from a broken arm!!! ooops! ;-)  but please keep me posted as to how it goes. And if there is any way I can just pull a rope with 'one arm' as part of crew, please let me know!! :-)

So far I have 11 people interested, so I will definitively do the course.

We could start tomorrow (Pentacost Monday) for those who can. Please let me know who would like to do 2 hours tomorrow. If there are more than 4 people, I will do 2 sessions.

The weather is just perfect now, so take this opportunity!

I'd love to go sailing, but probably don't really need lessons anymore (I have a RYA Coastal Skipper, experience).

If you need crew at any point, do let me know! Please let me know if you have any other suggestions to allow me to sail on the lake (are there clubs open to new members, or looking for crew, ...).

Thanks, Jonas

I'm very much interested. Please let me know when the next lesson takes place.
Pardon my ignorance in sailing, but what exactly are you teaching? To steer the weel?
If yes, is it more practical to take a private lesson rather than a group lesson?

Hi Fania,

As tomorrow is a day off, we will do our first lesson in the afternoon. Are you interested? It will be a group of 4 if you join.

I'm teaching beginners sailing: What is a sailboat, its parts, how it works. Then sailing, the different maneuvers, points of sail. So in a group it is sharing time at the helm (wheel) while the others help with the rest. My goal is that you should be able to pass the practical exam (if you wish to) needed for the Swiss sailing permit (lakes).

I hope this answers your question. Patrick

OK everyone, we are go for tomorrow Monday.

We shall meet at 2pm at the crain of the Société Nautique de Genève. If you are late, the boat is on the 2nd dock from the crain, place # B34. She's called "Tiburon". We will be back at 4pm.

Booked for the 2pm session: Juraj, Nomades, Sebastiangva, Joan F. Please send me your phone number and full name.

I can only take 4 people for an effective class. Ephraim, unfortunately you were the 5th, so unless there are 2-3 more people interested for a 2nd outing at 4pm, you will have to wait for the next class. I will propose some hours tomorrow and people can book.

If needed, I will take 4 more people at 4pm. Let me know.

What to take with you:

Boat shoes or non-marking soles

Shorts and t-shirt as it is suppsed to be 25deg. A sweater and a windbreaker just in case you get chilly.

Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen.

A bottle of water and a snack if you wish.

There is a chemical toilet onboard.

Cost is 200.- for the 2h, to be divided amongst you 4.

Looking forward to meeting you.

Hi Patrick and beginning sailors!

Looks like I 'missed the boat' this time by being away from my email for too long!

If there are another couple of people interested in joining for 4pm sailing lessons, I would like to join. Otherwise, I will have to be more quick next time :)

Thanks again Patrick!

Hello Patrick,

I might be interested in your sailing courses. Are you following the same structure as the official schools that lead to the mandatory licence to sail on the lake ? If I follow your courses will I be eligible for the exams ? Are you a 'regognized teacher'? And last, what about insurance ?

Thank you! :)

Good morning Alexandra,

Yes I follow the same structure as the official schools, i.e. teach you what would be needed for the exam. But as I am not a qualified or recognized teacher (I'm doing this for the first time, on my own time) I cannot give any guarantie. You will have to be the juge. It is not necessary to be taught by on official teacher, if you feel ready you can present yourself on any boat. Of course usually people do it with the teacher as they usually don't have their own boat. As for insurance, you should have the normal Responsabilité Civile in case you break somebody else's property, sailing or otherwise, but let's ot go there :-)

Hi Patrick - we'd like to book two spots for either Wednesday the 9th or Thursday the 10th, if you have seats available.  I'll have to check with Anna to see which day works best for her.

Thanks for taking Florian and me out last Wednesday.  If you want a testimonial for the website, I'll be happy to let everybody know that you are a very knowledgeable, experienced and personable captain.  The Tiburon is a great boat for lake sailing.  I had a fantastic time and look forward to going and learning again.

Hi there Patrick,

My husband and I are very much interested - although we would not be able to start until mid-July. If you have a mailing list that you send out updated dates to, can you put us on it please?

Thanks!

Hi patrick, I'd be interested. I'm not a beginner, more of a very very rusty ex-sailor keen for a refresher. So if you're taking a out a few people who have some experience, let me know!

I'm definitely interested in the group lessons as that is what would fit my budget. Please keep me posted on the next event, considering I missed the first few lessons, will this be an issue as others will be more advanced?

Thanks!

Welcome back to Geneva mate!

We're actually looking for a good sailing school on Geneva to feature as a group-deal on BuyClub. We can probably send 100-150 folks to the right school. Anyone you could recommend?

Hi Joe,

You need to have a Google account to view the schedule. Just create one.

Usually the classes are from 13:30 to 15:30, 16:00 to 18:00, and 18:30 to 20:30

Price is 50.- pp in a group lesson.

Hope it will work for you.

Hi Patrick. What a great idea. We live in Zurich and are looking for sailing lessons, preferably in English. There is a great need for english speaking lessons here, in case you are interested!

Last lessons of the year this week!

There should be some nice weather (and wind) tomorrow Wednesday 3rd October. Class at 16h, 17h, or 18h, as you wish.

There is 1 spot left for Friday afternoon.

Sunday looks also nice.

This is a great idea! I was literally just thinking i'd like to get into sailing. If you are doing private lessons, would that be one on one or would you cater for a private group too?
