buying a car for a one year stay

Hello, we are going to be living in the Geneva area for only one year and have been told that it is best to buy a car upon our arrival and sell it again upon our departure. Can you recommend a seller(vendeur de voiture d'occasion) for this type of transaction? Also, any idea what % of the price of the car is retained after one year of usage?

Merci

We would need it for the first week of August. We need a family car as we have 2 young children.

Hi,

I'm not sure that doing a lease for a year or less will be financially interesting...

If you are in a hurry, I would suggest buying a second hand car from second-hand car dealer such as Roc occasion in Vernier for exemple, it's the biggest around Geneva (approx 350 cars exposed).

Or take the time to find one from a private on Glocals or websites, it may cost you less than from a garage but without any garantees.

You also have to consider that you will have to sell the car a year after, most car dealer won't buy it from you, unless you buy another car, or at low price... might be a solution if you are too short in time.

Or put an add to sell it to a private, but don't do it last minute or it will be hard selling it at a correct price.

cheers

Thank you for the info on the used car dealer. Am I correct in understanding that you are saying that the used car dealership will typically NOT to buy the car back from me after a year?

Any idea what my loss will be ...

I have considered this other option called 'achat-rachat' which, depending on the car, will cost approximately  $4000CND to 6000CND for a 6 month period (http://resa.ca/cartt/). This seems expensive to me and I assume more expensive than a lease but I have no idea what the lease prices might be in Geneva for a basic 5 seater car say Huydai? - and then can cars be leased for just one year?

The car dealer doesn't have any obligation to buy your car back, depending of the model and year they won't event make an offer or at a really low price... already had customers who did the experience, and they ended-up selling it to a private, or at a really cheap price because they were short in time due to their departure date.

I just had one of my car dealer contacts over the phone and he told me that buying a car with a leasing for just one year is not possible.

Your achat-rachat service seems quite expensive also, might be better to directly by a 2nd hand car that you will sell when leaving.

Thank you again for the info. When you say selling it back for a really low price, can you give me more specific  numbers from a client example? I am trying to estimate the yearly cost so I can weigh my options. TX

I don't have specific numbers, but it wasn't worth it, the offered price was really lower than the car's value
