Howdy folks :)
I just wanted to say hello to all of you fine Glocals members and introduce myself since I've been lurking around the forums for a bit :D
My wife and I just moved to Eaux-Vives in Geneva last week and we've been busy getting things set up at home, and trying to get accustomed to the pace of life around here, which is pretty different from Chicago.
Anyways, I'm sure we'll see some of you folks out and about at the various upcoming Glocals gatherings soon ;)
See ya,
Adam

PS.
If anyone knows of a place that offers evening French lessons for beginners once or twice during the week, please let me know :D I stopped by the Ecole-club Migros yesterday and saw that they have some courses, but they were not beginning until March.

PPS
Also, I need to buy some curtains ASAP because the windows in my apartment are huge and let in way too much light! I'm just looking for some basic inexpensive pre-made curtains and I wasn't able to find any at the Super Coop near here.. so this is probably a strange first question, but where can I buy some basic curtains in this town?? :ermm:
Thanks!

Welcome.
About the evening French courses try Berlitz. My husband is just starting next week ( he's not a complete beginner, but they may have something for beginners).
For curtains try Conforama maybe, not sure though. There's Ikea as well but it's in Aubonne.

Migors ecole is quite good and within walking distance from Eaux-Vives. You may join a beginner group which started in January and see if the level is OK for you. They have not progressed a lot since January so you should be able to catch up easily.

Hi Marz and cowboy_CH, thanks for the welcome and the good info!
I checked out Berlitz because I saw that Glocals members get a discount. Their website says that there are no classes in Geneva right now, but I called and someone is supposed to call me back later:

Welcome Adam,
I have searched all over Geneva for curtains myself for our new place. The best deal I found was in St Genis on the French side of the border. There is a large discount furnishings store with lots of curtain options. Our set cost us 11 euro per panel. The store is near the Kyriad hotel. Hope this helps! Ikea in Aubonne is good place to look too, but for a large wall of windows like we have, it added up.
Good luck and welcome to Geneva. My husband and I have only been here a few months ourselves and just getting used to finding where things are available!
The french side of the border has some American stuff that you can't find on this side.... like chedder cheese!

Thanks for the nice warm welcome everyone!
We've been adapting to Geneva life pretty well and have even managed to find some curtains hahah... (p.s. check out Conforoma and Interio if you are ever looking ;)).
I've met a few of you at salsa and new member drinks, so perhaps more of us will meet at upcoming events :)

hey Adam, I did the same thing about 20 years ago and stayed. Great place here but my brothers and sister are quite far away (US based). Hope you grow accustomed to not being able to "shop 'til you drop" on Sundays - when I first arrived stores weren't even open after 5:00 pm on Saturdays - took me a while to adjust to buying beer on Thursday's for the weekend. Drop me a line if you want to hear more about this place I now call home. Andrew
