Hi Ed and welcome to Geneva!
First and foremost, I would encourage you to browse into the groups and find yourself some like-minded people who share one (or more) of your passions.
The rule in this group is that EVERYONE is free to organize any activity, even if you're new and don't know anyone. That is the purpose as a newcomer. Just make sure the venue is central and fits with people's office clock-outs.
With this in mind, you can always throw an open invitation for a drinks after work evening with the specified required time/place and people will join in. This usually makes for a potpourri crowd with different inputs, which will definitely help you find more about our beautiful city.
Likewise, feel free to look into the "to do" activities - not to blow my own trumpet but for example I have just suggested an "Escalade" themed event which will certainly provide you with first-hand traditions and some historical background about Geneva, while having some fun.
The rest, of course, is entirely up to you... Just remember that you are more likely to make expat friends sooner than local ones (no criticism intended).
Enjoy - I'm sure you will fall in love with this city because - WHO DOESN'T???
