Helloooo Zurich!
Well...*clear throat*...erm, where to begin...

Right, hello..(already said that haven't I)...hi!

Well, I can't say that I'm exactly new to Zurich. I've lived here for close to eight years now, know quite a few people and generally have a great life here. So what am I doing here?

Well, every once in a while I like to try and expand my social circle...call it an inner yearning (hmm, I realise now that I actually hate that word)... every so often I long to enrich my life by meeting and getting to know some great english-speaking people. I miss the "englishness" of life, if any one else out there is warped enough to understand what I mean.

Now don't get me wrong, my dad is Swiss, my mom is Kenyan, I speak fluent German/ Swiss-German and English and life is great here. Alas I had a british upbringing in Kenya which I very much tend to miss here...the wonderful English language (and by English I mean generally..I don't want to start receiving hate mail from patriotic Americans and the like...although it must be reiterated that British English is in fact truly the only form of proper English ;)), English humour, english-speaking friends..and by that I don't mean english-speaking like "We'll see us/ hear us later"..as cute and annoying as it sounds depending on the person saying it...etc.

I'm an easy-going, uncomplicated person that would like to make a few new friends and add them to my group of funny/sweet/rude/caring/couldn't care less/some almost-always-under-the-influence-it's-a-miracle-that-they-still-have-their-livers friends whom I think the world of because they're as demented as I am (and some even more, which is rather comforting to me).

Well, I thought I'd give the world in here a shout and hope to hear from someone soon.

Cheers!

Hi Fairydust, and welcome to glocals :-)

Based on your introduction, it looks like you will be a welcome addition to the Zurich glocals community, and Im looking forward to meeting you at a Member Activity soon.

Also, after 8 years in Zurich, you must have a ton of useful tips and info for the Zurich newbies, so I also hope to be seeing some interesting posts from you in the forums.

Maybe we can start with a small one, and work our way up from there -

What's the best Pizza joint in Zurich?
I'm a big pizza fan, and am always on the lookout for a good pizeria.

Welcome to glocals, again, and see you soon.

hey Fairydust!

May I just say that was the most refreshing and creative yet honest introduction I have ever read!

I'm insanely jealous of your language prowess... I'm trying to improve my German and Swiss German (all 453 dialects... haha). There's no way I could write like that in either of those languages!

All the best with the new acquaintance/friend/colleague hunt! I may see you at a function soon.

Hey Fairydust,

Welcome to glocals!

Nice intro indeed - clearly brings out your energy...:)

So what's so good about Zurich? I'm not asking to challenge you, I'm really asking cos I'm curious. I've been living in GVA for the past 10 years, and visited Zurich just a few times, and never really got to know it. What's daily life there like? Many expats? Relaxed vibes on the streets?

Hope to see you at the next glocals BBQ in Zurich,

Nir

Heya Lara!

Thanks... I know exactly what you mean about the dialects, but really after the first 280 dialects, it's child's play from there ;)

Hey, if you're around on the 22nd come on down to the meet and drink at Paddy Reillys...would be nice to meet you!

Wow, nine weeks...well welcome to Zurich in that case! It takes a while to get acquainted with the language but that will come to you in due time.

Otherwise I hope you're enjoying your stay so far!  Thanks for the welcome btw :)

Hello Nir,

Zurich is pretty much a melting pot...you meet people here from all over the world, some who've landed here for the oddest reasons. It's a beautiful city and offers both a fast-paced lifestyle as well as a relaxed, easygoing yet metropolitan way of life...it's a mix between big city life and small town charm depending on where you go and what you're looking for. I can say however, that it's not for everybody...either you like Zurich or you hate it. Most people living outside of Zurich tend to find people living in Zurich arrogant and tend to view them with a mixture of resentment and grudging admiration...the reasons elude me :D I think they're just like people anywhere else, it's just a matter of personal experience that colours one or the other person's impression of Zurich. I personally love us Zurich people :P

Hi Fairydust,

I would try to show you how interesting I am by my rhetoric but I just landed in Zurich 3 days ago and am still jet lagged so am lacking energy as of now.

Anyway, I moved here to join my boyfriend who has been working here since April and have met some of his friends, whom I like very much, and am also interested in creating my own social network.

So, if you're interested in meeting sometime...I would be happy to chat in English or learn a little German from you.

I enjoy a range of activities from road biking, to yoga & meditation, to wining and dining...and I mean wine like rot wein not "whining" ;)

Anyway, hope you are keeping warm and well these winter days.

Shanti~
