New Glocals member says hi and is looking for recommendations for a snowshoe / raquettes de neige trek
Hello fellow Glocals,

I have arrived in Geneva in 2008 and have recently joined glocals. Previously I was living in Brussels, and am enjoying having moved to the foot of the Alps. I thought I'd send this post to introduce myself to the network and, at the same time, ask for some advice.

I have recently discovered the joys of snowshoe hiking, and am keen to do more of it. Two friends will visit me next week, and we plan to do a small snowshoe trek of three days & two nights. The plan is to walk, say, 6 hours each day, and then spend the nights in a different chalet/hotel/refuge. The start and arrival points should be reachable by public transport from Geneva, or be linked by public transport, so we can get back to the car parked at the starting point. Another possibility would of course be a round circuit.

While in good physical shape, and able to read a map, none of us are mountaineers nor particularly experienced in snowshoe walking. I'm therefore looking for a trek that, while it can be tiring, is not particularly technically difficult or dangerous. I was thinking about the Jura, but am open to other places too.

Are there people out there who would be willing to share their recommendations for such an itinerary with me?

That would be greatly appreciated!

I send you my best wishes and hope to meet many of you in the coming months!

Christian

Hi Christian

how are you?

just a quick reply regarding the snowshoe trail in the Jura. There is a trail starting for the Marchairuz to the Mollendruz. It is a one day walk, not quite sure how long during the winter, but it is a nice walk. There is a ''refuge'' at the Marchairuz, half way at Mont-tendre and at the Mollendruz. They have a hotel and restaurant there too.

Have a look at http://www.hotel-marchairuz.ch/  it may help you

Some trails are closed, depending of the weather, quite windy up there. But there are a lot of trails so I'm pretty sure you gonna find something ;)

If you prefer something more challenging, you drive to Valais, toward the Grand-St-Bernard, the gasp (col) is closed during the winter, but you park at the last village and walk up there, it takes about 4 hours if I remember well and the landscape is just WONDERFUL !!!!

hope these infos can help you

have fun up there! ;)

Hello Caro,

thank you very much for the advice. We did go to the Jura, and stayed in the Vallée de Joux. I decided to opt for the somewhat easier to organise variant of staying at the same B&B for 3 days, rather than doing a hut to hut trek. We hiked up Mont Tendre on Friday and the Dent de Vaulion on Saturday. Spectacular stuff, and the snow was excellent!

Thanks also for the Grand-Saint-Bernard suggestion, I aim to try that one out too!

Hope to meet you in Geneva one of these days, ciao,

Christian
