New to Zug

Hello everyone,

I am an IT professional and am about to join company in Zurich. I am new to Switzerland and wonder if someone can put me in write direction regards to finding a flat to rent in Zug or Schwyz that is easily commutable to Zurich. Any web sites that I can check or any other means to search for accomodation.

Thanks, Paresh

Hi Paresh

The best source of information in Zug is the weekly Zuger Amtsblatt. It comes out on Fridays and is sold in Kiosks etc.

There is an online version, try http://www.amtsblatt.ch/marktblatt under Immobilien, zu vermieten

You can also try

http://www.immoscout24.ch/IS24Web/_V2/Search.aspx?cat=1&tab=0&type=1&realty=1&country=1&nav=0&subnav=0&lng=en&wl=1

If you are travelling by train to Zrh it is good if you can minimise the total number of changes of bus/train. With the shortage of apartments in Zug that is not always as easy as it sounds.

Perhaps someone else has info about Schwyz. The Amtsblatt does cover some flats in the surrounding cantons.

Good luck

regards

Martin

Hey, the following are always the popular links :)

www.homegate.ch

www.immoscout24.ch

www.amtsblattzug.ch

maybe you should try Thawil (10 mins by train to zurich) OR Baar (30 mins by train to zurich) instead.  Check www.sbb.ch/en

FYI, apartments in Switzerland are usually rented unfurnished, but a kitchen always comes fully equipped with electrical appliances built in.

Good luck in your apartment hunting! Cool

Thanks Ai Meng.

Is Thawil OR Baar in Canton of Zug or Schwyz. Also, how is the bus/train connection to Zurich (Uetilhof) from these two places? Is there a monthly pass for train/bus/tram?

Thanks once again. I am sure I will have more queries, so will keep asking.

Best Regards

Hi Paresh,

You are welcome...

Thalwil is a municipality in the district of Horgen in the canton of Zürich in Switzerland.

Baar is a village in the canton of Zug in Switzerland.

Arth Goldau on the other hand, is a lovely place in Schwyz.

Arth is a municipality in Schwyz District in the canton of Schwyz in Switzerland.

You can check the bus/train connection using the link i sent earlier.  www.sbb.ch/en just type in your origin and destination.

And your last question, you can check it from here -> http://mct.sbb.ch/mct/en/reisemarkt/abos-billette/abonnemente/ga/general-abo-preise.htm or just pop in to the train station counter and they will be able to further explain to you.

Hope that helps.

Cheers,

Ai Meng

Hi Martin

I gather that the tax is different in different regions. What is the tax rate in Zurich & Zug? Is there an official website where I can find tax rate for different regions?

Thanks, Paresh

Tax in CH is not so straightforward. You pay Community, Kanton and Federal taxes. The former two vary from community to community and canton to canton. It depends where you live at 31. December which community you are deemed to reside in for tax purposes.

One simple way to compare the taxes is the Comparis site:

http://www1.comparis.ch/steuern/steuervergleich/steuervergleich.aspx

You can also look on the various cantons websites, eg

http://www.zug.ch/behoerden/finanzdirektion/steuerverwaltung

You also need to clarify how you will be paid and if any tax will be deducted from your salary at source - Quellensteuer. If so, then it does not matter where you live, it is where you work that determines the amount of tax.

good luck

regards

Martin

PS (Disclaimer) I am not an expert in tax matters. The above is given in good faith; you should get specialist advice if tax is important to you. :=)

Another thing to consider. Zurich is a pretty lively city, with lots of night life etc. If you are working there, may be most of your friends come from Zurich and living outside the city is a disadvantage. Zug and Schwyz are much smaller and quieter places, less hustle and bustle than Zurich. Have a good look around before you decide where you want to get a flat.

Baar is a sleepy town, but less than 2 miles to Zug.  You can take trains and buses easily.

If you want more of a "cosmopolitan" existence, you should live in Zurich.  If you plan to just work and live, but will have a little time to enjoy yourself, then....LIVE IN ZURICH!  :-)

Living in Zug or Baar is nice.  It really depends on what your interests are, and if you are willing to spend a bit of time on the train/bus.  At midnight, it can take as long to get cross town in Zurich as it does to take the train from Zurich to Zug.  Still, living in Zurich would be very cool.

They both have their strengths.  You need to know what you want.

Thanks Martin, much appreciate your input.

As you said, t

Tax is based on canton and community of residence place

. I have not yet started working there but my understanding is that tax will be deducted at source. So I am not sure if my tax will be based on residence or not?
