Newbie Brit in Geneva

Evening all,

Just thought i'd introduce myself as I am brand new here in Geneva, just moved from London for work. I'm currently living in Eaux Vives but am keen to explore more of Geneva and the surrounding areas.

I like running, swimming, skiing, cooking/baking and would love to meet some people to eat/drink/try and be healthy (!) with so do get in touch. :D

I also really need to find out what the best substitute for cheddar is....

Hello, Becky, and welcome to glocals!

For a cheddar of sorts, try “Cathedral” which you can find in the larger  Coop and  Migros stores.  You can also find cheddar at the fresh-cut cheese counters of  Manor and Globus and the larger  supermarkets in France.

However, for a wider selection of cheddars, visit Jim’s British market in

Saint-Genis or Gland or online.

For a French “equivalent”,  I like a good Cantal which you can find in the bigger French supermarkets or at a stall in a French street market.

Enjoy!   And all the best,

R.

Hi Becky!

Welcome to Geneva and glocals! I'm sure you'll have a great time here.

Not sure if you're into this, but there is a weekly Pub Quiz tonight at Mr. Pickwick Pub on rue de Lausanne. I posted an activity for it on Things To Do. Feel free to join us, if you like.

Today's hints for topics are Albert Einstein and Wild Wild West.

Thanks so much for the invitation David. Unfortunately I had plans but do let me know if you plan another pub quiz (the music round is my favourite!) :)

Thanks Ritchie, this is so helpful!

I managed to find Cathedral in my local Coop but will definitely keep an eye out for Cantal as it would be great to try something a little different.

Hi Becky,

Welcome to Geneva and glocals! Where were you living in London? I spent a year in Earl's Court a while back. I'm also working in Eaux Vives, so if you need any help with the area, just drop me a line.

FYI, on the theme of being healthy, this might interest you: every Sunday there are free guided hikes up the Saleve (usually advertised on glocals, but also described here: http://www.knowitall.ch/events-calendars/activities-calendar/icalrepeat.detail/2013/06/23/10092/-/free-hikes-on-the-saleve )

I hope you enjoy your time here!

Best,

Steve

I would be up for eating some cheese or going for a drink with you guys too if you're open to other people joining. I'm new to the area too (I moved from Wales)

Hello all!

I'm also fairly new from London. Hope to see you at the Glocals drinks on Friday, or count me in for drinks (and cheese) if you go another time.

Mmmm Cheddar... I recently discovered that the Manor in the Chavannes Centre sells a fair few of the Snowdonia Cheese Company cheeses...

http://www.snowdoniacheese.co.uk/cheese/black-bomber/

They don't have the entire range but the Black Bomber is delicious and, imho, far better than most you can get around here.

I'm not sure if they do them in the Manor food place in the town centre but could be worth a try.

Hi,

I've just joined glocals, although been in the area for a year now! I also enjoy cooking/baking and I have a friend here who is an amazing baker. Maybe we could get together sometime (and watch GBBO?)
