Advice requested on holidays in Croatia

Hi Guys,

Could anyone recommend a nice place to stay in Split and in Sibenik as well as what is the easiest way to travel from one to the other. I have connected to the Croatian railways website but I guess there is a bug in the English version so I was not able to find any connections by train. Is there any other way to get there?

Thanks in advance if you could help!

Hi Alicja,

We travelled right down the entire length of Croatia and back again last month. We stayed in a different place every night and never struggled to find somewhere. The exception was Split, which we liked so much that it was the only place we stayed for 2 consecutive nights. Although it was on the wish list we never got to stay in Sibenik.

Most places we found by simply ringing up places in Lonely Planet guide but booked one or two through www.bookings.com . We also just turned up and asked around on occassions. I know it was off season but I never got the impression that these places ever get over-crowded.

Forget trains, there are virtually none. The road infrastructure is just being put in place but that's about it. We were on motorbikes and found it easy to get around but if you're not a biker you will be stuck with either cars or buses or ferries. You can probably get to Trieste by train and then work out something from there.

Happy hunting! I hope you have a great holiday - we did.

Hi Alicja,

I have been vacationing in Croatia for most of my life, so maybe I can give a bit of perspective.

Bus or rent a car is your best option for transportation. For instance, coming to Split airport, you have a bus taking you to either Split or towards the west side of the coast, to Trogir and then onwards. If you want to get to Split fast and not sit around in trains all day (or day and a half from Trieste to Split), take EasyJet - they have a direct route from Geneva to Split. This link gets you to the timetable of the bus companies starting in Split and you'll see there are quite a few connections to Šibenik: http://www.ak-split.hr/EN/vozni.red/VozniRedOdlazaka.aspx

Finding a place shouldn't be very complicated as most locals have figured out tourism is their best source of revenue and even if you don't book in advance the local tourist office will have a list of rooms/suites for rent. The only thing about that is if you come during the peak tourist season (in the next 2 months that is), booking on the spot probably requires you not being very picky about the location of where you stay and ask for pictures of the place before you commit to staying there (not all, but you might find some crafty locals over embelishing their places when selling).

For hotels your best bets will still be www.booking.com, www.edreams.com or the Croatian website: http://hr.hotels.com. If you do decide to go with the latter, I would still check the other sites, because they might have bigger discounts and thus be cheaper than the local site.

Although at peak season prices you will find everything much cheaper than here anyway :)

Enjoy your vacation,

Vesna

There should be a plane to Split or Dubrovnik from Geneva during the summer season and then you can take a bus from the aeroport to Split; you can take the train to Trieste and there take the bus to Rijeka (Croatia) where you can then take the night ship to Split or you can combine fast boats as well. Check out: www.jadrolinija.hr

Taking a bus or a boat is the best option if you don't have a car. Renting the car would make it easier though.

Visit Makarska if you find time, or even better island Korcula (that's a must - like any other island really ;).
