New York

Hi,

Can anyone recommend a good b&b, sub-let or reasonably-priced (LOL .. ) hotel for 8 nights early September in New York?   Any other recommendations of restaurants or must-sees would be a bonus....

Thanks so much   : )

I'd recommend though that you check Craig's List for sublets before booking a hotel:

http://newyork.craigslist.org/

But if that doesn't work out, Columbia University maintains a list of hotels in New York for visitors which it divides up by area and price range:

www.1291.com
www.thepodhotel.com
www.hotels.com

Hi there,

I highly suggest you also check out www.nycvisit.com .  You will find it very helpful with the top restaurants as well as discounts tickets on shopping, restaurants, events, even parking in the city.  A lot of natives use the site (such as me).

Just a few of my suggestions in case you are interested:

Best Broadway Shows (currently):

  • IN THE HEIGHTS (2008 Tony Award winner  for Best Musical)
  • BOEING BOEING (very funny comedy play)

Most Popular Hotels:

  • The Greenwich Hotel (Robert Deniro’s new hotel)
  • Waldorf –Astoria
  • The Bowery Hotel
  • W Hotel

“Where to Spot a Celebrity”  Restaurants

  • Balthazar
  • Four Seasons restaurant
  • Merkato 55

Great Pizza (even if the Swiss’ version is better)

  •  Arturo’s – on West Houston in Greenwich Village

Fun Ideas

  • Pack a dinner basket at Amish Market (49th & 9th) and head over to “Clinton Cove” – Hudson River Park (55th & West Side Highway). Or take the dinner basket and have a picnic in Central Park.
  • Go to a baseball game just for the experience
  • Go to Japas Japanese bar (38th & Madison), get a private room and sing karaoke as loud as you want (and order saki if you need any help)
  • Kiss your significant other at the top of the Empire State Building  (very romantic)

Hope that's a little helpful.  Enjoy your trip!

Angie
