What to do with my parents (Age 80 and 89)

Hi,

Anyone has ideas of things I can do with my parents around Geneva? They'll be here for a week or so. They can speak French.

They are both in good health, and they like to walk but well, no more than say 20 minutes or so.

I cannot take them anywhere that is crowded - my mum can easily be pushed and fall.

TIA.

Hi, just a few ideas, CERN microcosm visit (very quiet, specially in the week), boat tour on lake, telepherique up to saleve and restaurant at the top, Yvoire (as suggested by Jack B), the naural history museum, some nice tea shops to enjoy mignardise, the old town, parc des bastions, perhaps some classical concerts and theatre ?

Thermal baths are a good idea, but I am afraid they may be crowded. Anyone knows a really quiet one? Do not mind traveilling more.. We'd definetely go during the week.

In addition to the suggestions already made, visit the Olympic Museum in Ouchy.  Have a trip to Montreux and, possibly, the Château de Chillon.

There’s some walking involved but they can go at their own pace and the views are superb.

They can go by boat and return by train or take the train both ways.

Also, take the regular bus service to Annecy, and there have a boat trip at lunch-time and eat on board.  There’s a choice of  “plats du jour” which aren’t expensive.

In fact, there’s lots to do for senior citizens in and around Geneva although they probably won’t get any rebates as they would in the UK.

Best wishes, R.

The Minitrain in Geneva - as embarrassing as it sounds - is surprisingly good fun actually. It takes you all the way from Palais de Nations on to the other side of the lake across the old town and up to Cologny. Lots of things to see and enjoy in good weather, in a radius your parents would never be able to walk. My parents really liked it. You can catch it near Bain de Paquis or at the small bridge at Molard. (check online in any case)

My advice is for you to stop worrying because it makes you nervous and that’s contagious.

Your mum will be perfectly OK if you keep an eye on her but don’t fuss.

I’m a senior cit. myself and speak from personal experience.

All the best, R.

If you go during the week, it shouldn't be that crowded - especially at lunchtime (at least from my experience - except perhaps on Wednesdays during term time).  Try and get there at 11h30-ish and I'm sure it'll be fine... and your parents will think you're wonderful!  You could also book a massage for them.  Mine loved that!  :o)  JT.

I don`t know if it`s just me, but pools are in general a hazzard for falling, certainly for people at that age, no matter if it`s crowded or not.

You could take them to Gruyère http://www.la-gruyere.ch/de/

Bern is also very nice and as mentioned before, you never go wrong with Annecy.

A nice place is Lake side, if we get any sun Frown

Dont go to cern, it not easy to get around and because of the 60th aniversary, its very busy.

Maybe go to the Telepheric, and go for a walk on the top of the Saleve.

Go early and walk in Monthreux for an afternoon, but it gets really busy after 4pm because of the music festival.

Visit Avanche, its about 1hour from Geveva and is old roman ruins and aphtheater.

Visit Balenberg, but its more than 20min walk, call them and ask if they might have wheel chairs to use? its really special place and is totally calm and pretty.
