wine tasting around Geneva

Hello everyone,

I am looking to find a nice winery closeby to Geneva (French or Swiss) to tour and sample some delicious wine. I have been looking online without luck and just recently joined this site. Any suggestions would be great!

Hey. It's a bit out of the way and not very touristy but I know one small Chateau in the Cotes d'Orbe. You'd need to take a train to Yverdon les Bains (and maybe have a swim in the thermal baths while you're there) then take a bus (or cycle) to Valeyres-sous-Rances, the Chateau by the Auberge does wine tasting every Saturday morning and the village folk are most intrigued by foreigners. Otherwise- I think in Aigle they have a wine museum with tastings- but I might be wrong on that.

Good luck and sante!

Let me know if you find anywhere else.

Hi Jerry - I write about Swiss wine regularly (I'm the editor of GenevaLunch.com, where I have a wine blog, but I do a lot of other wine writing) and there are so many options I wouldn't know where to begin! Depends on what you're looking for and where you're from so I know what your expectations are, since visiting wineries is different in each country. Mainly for you, or do you have guests coming to town? You can contact me directly if you like.

Otherwise, the Swiss Wine Guide, which you can buy online and in some Naville stores, lists the country's 400+ best wineries. And OPAGE is canton Geneva's agriculture office, which oversees wine production, and they list online, with a map, all the Geneva wineries. They range from relatively big to tiny, most don't charge, and while they don't expect you to buy wine at the end (truly!), I usually figure on buying 1-3 bottles to cover the cost of their time. Some have regular hours, others are by appointment. Geneva has a mix, from mediocre to excellent - if anyone tells you Geneva doesn't make good wine, their information is 20 years out of date! And nearby Vaud has some very very good wineries - depends on how far you want to go, if you have a car, etc. France is of course famous for its wines, but again, depends on what you're looking for, with the ones close to Geneva producing similar wines, Beaujolais and Burgundy to really get into French wines are a couple hours away.
