OrphanAid Africa Bike Ride – “Get Up for Ghana”

Sunday, June 13th, 2010 @ 10:00
Meeting at Genève Roule - 17 Place Montbrillant (behind Gare Cornavin), Geneva
Due to the popularity of last year’s event, we’re organizing another charity bike ride to benefit the OrphanAid Africa organization! Join us for a brand new 28 kilometer route that starts and ends at Gare Cornavin and takes you to some of the most beautiful areas that surround Geneva. With our route you’ll find yourself among vineyards, forests, open farm roads and flower fields… all while being surrounded by Geneva’s neighboring mountains! Some of the areas we will cycle through are: Geneva, old city of Vernier, Satigny, Peney, Aire-la-Ville, Cressy, and Onex.
Aim: To raise CHF5’000 to help construct a kitchen for the staff of the OA Primary School and OA Health Centre in the Ayenyah village of Ghana.
We hope to do this by participant sponsorship in order to raise as much money as possible. You can really make a difference. Please see the attached sponsorship form to help you get started.
What better way to enjoy your Sunday than by spending it outside; exploring the beautiful scenery that’s offered right outside of Geneva. A relaxing bike ride is one of the best ways to take in the sights, sounds and smells of unfamiliar areas! Don’t forget… you’ll also be supporting a great cause while you enjoy yourself!
No Bike? …no problem! The great people at Genève Roule are helping to provide enough bicycle rentals for anyone that needs one. Comfortable, 24-speed city bicycle rentals will be available for CHF10 and you can keep the bike for the whole day (although we will be ending our route back at Genève Roule if you’d like to return it then). These bikes are equipped with a rear rack (for your picnic materials), helmet, and lock.
Genève Roule also has free bicycles available, although they’re uniquely sized (adjustable seats though), heavier, and available on a first-come first-serve basis. As you cannot reserve these in advance, so we suggest arriving at the store’s opening hour (8:00 am).
Please contact Natalie ([email protected]) if you wish to reserve a bicycle and she’ll have it waiting for you at the meeting point. Please send your height (cm) so she makes the proper reservation.
Event Participation Fee: CHF20 per person. Participation is free for anyone who raises over CHF100 in sponsorship. If you are interested in raising sponsorships for this ride, please contact Natalie ([email protected]) for a sponsorship form.
Who can participate: Anyone! We specifically designed this route for people of all fitness levels to enjoy. The entire route is 28km and the pace will be relaxed. Invite friends and families for this great Sunday activity. Last year we had about 50 participants so we’re expecting more this year!
Additional Info: If you do decide to bring your own bicycle, preferably bring a mountain or hybrid bicycle as one section is unpaved. If you only have a road bicycle, don’t worry, it’s not a problem. One of our guides will lead you on an alternate path when we get to the unpaved area (which is right before we stop for lunch) and we’ll meet the rest of the group at the picnic area.
Make sure to come at 10:00 a.m. if you’ll be renting a bicycle, as we plan to hit the road at 10:30 a.m.
