Best ski areas for beginning kids and adults?

Hello,

My kids (5 and 9) are complete beginners, and so am I.  My husband has skied a bit before, but probably wouldn't be up for teaching anyone.

Anyone have suggestions of some friendly, EASY nearby ski hills to go to?

I've read that the Jura area (http://www.monts-jura.com) is good and close - thoughts?

thanks!
Sylvia

Al the ski domais have beginner areas. Just go wherever is practical for you  and/or where you can find best prices for lessons. Jura is ok when there is plenty of snow but conditions fluctuate a loit being low altitude. Slopes are also not very wide which is maybe not ideal for a beginner.

I think the Juras got quite a bit of snow last night.  Conditions should be good tomorrow.

Col de la Faucille has an area where children are taught and for adults the slopes are not too demanding

I've skied a lot on the French Savoie side, here are a few ideas:

Habere Poches - has snow till quite late in the season and has a beginners area that is really good for small children, there is a baby teleski. Views of Lac Leman and a good ski area for adults.

Orange - just a few runs but doesn't get busy during the holidays and has a baby teleski for tots, Montmin up the road is similar. Small cafe at base of pistes but across the carpark from the runs.

les Brasses - to be avoided, very busy, full of Genevois, not enough restaurant capacity and car parking at weekends. Interesting pistes but badly signed in places.

Sommand - excellent snow, south facing so nice to sunbathe, has a magic carpet lift which is great for beginners but children should not be left unattended on these lifts

Pras de Lys - linked to Sommand, had a nice long gentle run in town with a restaurant at the bottom, gets busy at peak times

On the Jura side les Crozet has lift access to the ski area which can be very busy, the beginners area is good but the rope tow is hard for kids after a while, can be very busy.

Lelex, has a nice field in town for beginners with a drag lift, the resort runs are more challenging

If you go into the Savoie get a French telepeage beeper as the toll both at Annemasse gets very busy in the season.

Hope this helps

Oh and I nearly forgot, you must ski la Croissette on le Saleve at least once!

Solaison is also good with kids, all snow dependent of course.

I've also skied the piste de Braconnier at Brizon but I believe the last lift has shut down now. :-(.

Actually it s true,I don t like skiing in Switzerland,  I prefer going to France :

Les 3 vallées  ( Courchevel, Meribel, and Val Thorens)

Les 2 alpes

Tignes

Seems both of you still have a lot to discover about ski resorts.

If I'm going to snowboard I certainly do not drink. And if i go the bar i just take alcohol-free cocktail. Cheers

There's a great blog Geneva Family Diairies that had a piece on ski schools for kids.  Perhaps it has info?

I can highly recommend Les Diablerets - it has everything including genuine Swiss atmosphere, and it is only two hours away either by train or by car.
