recommendation for cross country ski instructor-GVA Area

Hello,

I am looking to get a lesson in cross country skiing, and was wondering if anyone would have any recommendations for an instructor. Based in Geneva and relying on public transport, I would be happy to go to La Vattay, La Givrine, or anywhere else with a similar radius from Geneva and public transport access.

Looking forward to any suggestions you may halve!

We've used Alain at La Vattay, and can recommend.  Not sure about public transport getting there, but good lessons.

Hey, if anyone would be interested in making a group for a lesson that would be cool. I have a car so can help with transport.

Hey Mike, I haven' been cross country skiing in Switzerland/France yet so don't know how the tracks look like and also don't know if you wanna learn classic style or skating style. I'm not a big fan of classic style as (from my point of view) skating is 1) easier to learn 2) better exercise 3) not such a chemistry with waxing. However if you want to wait for Kathy and want to start (or at least try) ASAP I am able to "help you a bit". I don't want to call it a lesson as I'm not a profi instructor although I have some kind of license for it.

In case you're OK with group lessons: the CERN Ski club is open to everybody, has XC lessons at La Vattay on Saturday (classic+skating, several levels, lots of beginners..), and has a bus from St Genis and Gex. Lessons have started last Saturday, so you'd need to get in touch with the responsible for cross-country (Jens), via http://cern.ch/club-ski-fond

Hope this helps (and is not considered as SPAM).

wow, this thread got popular! Yes, Kathy will be away for a few weeks. In the meantime I still need a lesson anyway and will try to find a lesson on Saturday. Once I set something up I can inform you all who I end up taking a lesson with in case you would like to join me.

Chrigela, please do. Also,

Zlata, thanks for the offer. I will need to find some equipment first though!

Question: What is the difference betweem the classic and the skating styles?

Hey Chrigela! Thanks for picking up great topic! I do cross-country classic for a while, though the instructor always can give you more to learn. I would like to join the group as well.

I may drop you a message if I will be in a good shape for coming weekend.

The styles are just different and therefor train different body parts. Classic is a very good exercise for the upper body and arms. Free style or skating is maybe better for the legs and bum. And it's more fun and quicker. :) Still, if you want to learn cross country skiing, you should start with the classical as you'll need it at certain areas anyway.
