Here's the overview of our first show of the year......check out our website for more details www.theenglishshow.com

Susan Bernofsky, German cultural expert and translator was an invited Panelist at the Basel Buch Messe last month. She spoke to Roy and Maria about the works of Swiss author Robert Walser. Walser, contemporary of Kafka, was a lost genius of the early 20th Century. Translations such as Bernofsky's helped rehabilitate his reputation and put him onto the international cultural map. Bernofsky also writes a perceptive blog on German culture and the Berlin experience.

Oliver Tabeling, Basel native and jazz pianist of the Oliver Tabeling Trio, chats with Pete to about his latest album, a live concert recording at the Bird's Eye Jazz Club. He shares with us about his influences and the inspiration for the album, titled Walking along the River. The Trio is currently touring Europe.

Rob Stuart, local film reviewer, tells us what's coming up in Basel Theatres. He reviews some potential blockbusters as well as mentions some under the radar pictures, all of which are playing in Basel Theatres.

All this plus the latest Basel and Swiss national news, sports, and cultural events from Basel and over the borders in Germany and France. Click here to follow us on Twitter!

A summary of this weeks show......for more info head to our website www.theenglishshow.com

Ahead with English is an extra-curricular English programme for English-speaking children who attend local schools. There are activities for pre-school children (3-5) three mornings per week and a whole range of English classes after school for kids from 5 to 13. They also offer ESOL classes for children who are non-English speakers. The organisation is based in Therwil and they have 180 children in the various programmes. Contact them on the internet site if you're interested - they'd be happy to organise a visit. Or you can give them a ring on 061 421 4109 or 061 901 8921.

A summary of this weeks show......for more info head to our website www.theenglishshow.com and down the podcast to listen later............

Tonight Sue Style reports on the history of Fondue, first mentioned in Homer's Iliad, where to find the best fondue in Basel. The Swiss cheese fondue as we know it was born in Neuchâtel in 18th century in order to accomodate increased production of cheese and wine. Economic necessity produced the following recipe: grated cheese + garlic + wine + cornstarch + nutmeg, pepper and maybe kirsch. Listen for more tips on how to create your own fabulous fondue at home.

Anina Ineichen, of the Green Party was our guest in the studio this evening. One of the main campaigns of the Green Party is the fight against nuclear power - they want Switzerland to abandon the idea of building new atomic power stations and find alternative resources for producing electricity, for example hydroelectric and wind farms.

The Green Party is celebrating success in their campaign to persuade Basel's local governament to build more cycle paths in the city and they would be happy to talk to anyone who is interested in getting involved in the the Young Green Alliance. www.jungesgruenesbuendnis.ch

Gökhan Comak from the Kurdish radio show Hêvî talked about the Kurdish Culture Week which is taking place from the 26th to the 31st of January all around Basel. You can get all the information from the website www.skgemeinschaft.ch.

Battlefield Band 2009, from left to right: Sean O'Donnell, Alasdair White, Mike Katz, Alan ReidAlan Reid of Battlefield Band dropped by to have a chat with Maria before the Band's gig at Parterre. Mr. Reid talks about the band's forty years of having fun playing music around the world. The band is touring the German-speaking world to promote their new album, Zama Zama...try your luck. Delphine interviewed Patrick Brunner, a Salsa teacher from the Salsamaneo Salsa school at Kuppel in Basel. He told us all we need to know if we want to learn to dance salsa, where to go dancing around Basel - and why he's looking forward to the upcoming Swiss International Salsa festival Feb 26-28.

Things to do in Basel is a Facebook page founded by TES contributor Kevin Pollard - Kevin has moved on to Australia but the page remains and is prospering, with a membership of nearly 1700. Maria spoke tonight with Louise Haughton, Sagar Daddikar and Alison Burton, part of the 20-strong administration team that has kept the site vibrant and relevant - and a clearinghouse for information about what's on in Basel. Check out the page by clicking on the link above.

Due to technical difficulties at Radio X, we have no stored audio for playback available for this show.

Maluvi from Au Soleil Biederthal came to the Radio X studio to tell us the latest news from this quirky Bistro over the French border. The last weekend of the month the bistro comes alive with music and art - look this Friday and Saturday for Aede performing at 20:00.

Janet Stücklin, of the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis is giving a recital on the Gothic Harp and Fiddle at a Guided Evening of Medieval Music at the Kartäuserkirche next Tuesday at 20:15 -  just after our show.  She joins Maria in the studio with a dual strung harp tonight to tel us a bit about the development of the harp, and preview the first piece of her program, Trotto.

Cara Rynerson informs us about a book sale this week hosted by the American Women's Club of Basel. The annual sale raises money for the care and upkeep of Basel's largest English language library, located at Centrepoint near Barfusserplatz. The booksale is Thursday from 10- 6 and Friday  from 10-2 - so sneak away from work at lunch and stock up for your summer reading.
