Just moved in (if you are too interested look at introduction).
I play the guitar - fully equipped (tube preamp, 2x100 watts tube poweramp, 2x12" speakers, overcrowded pedal board and a good electric guitar + audio interface and some microphones for recording).
I am interested in playing... anything basically. Don't know music theory, but have some practical experience and can play quite all right by year. Really love to jam in general.
I don't know any songs by other bands but if necessary I can learn some (don' expect me to pick up virtuoso pieces in 10 minutes though ;)).
My equipment is at store until I find permanent accommodation but after that... Well after that I want to play - if there is a bunch of like minded people, why not make a band and record a couple of pieces.
Very much fun oriented - I don't take myself too serious so don't come with plans for MTV - the motto is "Let's play around and see what happens"

Yes, forgot to write above - I am in Geneva.
Now about the shops - made a small tour last week and I very disappointed, I browsed the 5-6 shops that were listed as well supplied and with good choice but... I am sorry but the small-town shop where I come from in Netherlands had a bigger choice than all of these together (the only impressive thing was the collectionary items in Music Store, but I am looking for something produced after 1970, which has more practical than collectionary value).
So if anyone knows a well-supplied shop (e.g. if I want an acoustic guitar I would like to be able to try at least 5 to 10 brands, at least 4 or 5 models of each, similar for anything else) please give advise.
Otherwise I guess I will be looking towards a small shopping trip to Germany or France.

And while we are at it - are there rental rehearsal rooms here (I know it is not everywhere, but in Bulgaria we have rehearsal rooms with some basic equipment, which can be rented not too costly per hour , that is what I mean, not a place on monthly basis).

Hi there, I have found nothing for now. Well, I have found several OK stores, a good guitar tech who can do my amp biasing, etc. but not yet anyone to play with.
My next step, but after 1 Jan (going back to Bulgaria for holidays and all) is to ask around in Music Store and Music Arts to see where can I post adds for band search.
@epicure - thanks, that is a nice offer if it is a standard Tele and not a highway one ! However, I already have my own Tele (not really a standar one, it is a body from a 80's Japanese Tele + Moon guitar neck, strings through body and currently installing 2x Bare Knuckle pickups).
While we are on the topic - can you guys recommend any clubs for live music ? I haven't visited any yet, so any recommendations would be welcome, whether it is for alternative stuff or for jazz/blues, or basically anything.

Yo,
1. Jams: LOTS around Gva and Lausanne - depends what u're looking for (Blues, Standard Jazz, Rock, Progressive, Experimental...)
2. Shops: Largest and best shop in the area (Morges) is Boullard Musique. For closer, try "The Works" in Carouge (lots of guits and very friendly staff) and "Music Store" in Paquis (a bit expensive but friendly staff) - for best prices of course go Thomann!!!
3.Rehearsal rooms: AMR in rue des Alpes (near da trainstation) - 180CHF for the whole year, gets you membership status and price reductions on concerts around town
What kind of music are you looking into playing?

Wow thanks !
That was very useful.
I know Music Store, because I live next to it - very good if you are looking for something vintage/high-end. I think the prices are about OK for what they are selling. Also I've been to Music Arts, will check out The Works though, as I am looking for one aprticular Electro-Harmonix.
About the jams and band: where can I check for info ? I don't really have any preferences for style - not very keen on death metal or black metal :D Jazz might be a bit up the slope for my skills.
Usually I most prefer alternative/rock/ska, more experimental/progressive stuff, but as mentioned I am open for anything. After all, we all know the pentatonics :D

yie yie yio...
electro harmonix is a cool company. check out prices at www.thomann.de and compare with what you find locally. Prices are usually 1/3 less, including transportation, customs etc. I ve bought all my gear from him, 100% safe, new, and 3 years warranty (yes, even MORE than what the manufacturer gives!!)
Live & Jams: Jaydo's (Paquis I think), AMR (rue des alpes - 2 options), Chat Noir (Carouge), The Scene (Plainpalais), CERN (IF you have an access to get in the fort), the blue lizard in Lausanne etc..
pentatonics are cool, but also try the diminished half step ;)

I just meant they save the situation when you dunno what to play. Either that or the chromatic and you act as if you are a genius jazzman misunderstood by the audience :D

I know what you meant.. but min 42 modes x 12 keys, you should always have something to play... :D
remember: 99% practice, 1% magic

Hi Kaloyan,
found anyone to jam with yet?
I'm also going away for xmas and I´ll get my guitar as well. I'm just starting again but if you tell me a few songs you like, I´ll learn them and we can jam in january/febuary at this AMR place near the station.
I know how to use Cubase, so I can use it to create drums and bass or synth sounds or record us and mix and stuff.
what kind of music do you like apart from jazz?
let me know if your interested

I was just about to post a similar thread.
I haven't got any of my pedals or amps with me but I record mainly onto my laptop. I've been playing for about 8 years and tend to mix up different styles a bit, especially lead stuff. I know a bit of theory but I never had the patience for it! If you're up for jamming and seeing where it leads then count me in!
