Yes, unfortunately this is common in Geneva.  Since the average apartment is 60+ years old, noise insulation is very poor.  As is the education of some people.

I lived in an apartment in rue du Vieux-Collège where this regulation was in force.

I also moved into a flat-share without checking the use of the bathroom, only to find that it was out of bounds after 9:30 p.m. I  couldn’t get out of that place fast enough.

Well, it was a multi-functional bathroom, so I couldn’t wash my hands, brush my teeth, urinate –

and certainly not sing or cuddle up under the shower (not that I had anyone to cuddle up to at the time).

I feel for you. I am living in such a place. An old couple arguing every night, using the toilette 6 times (Which always sounds like the Niagara falls in my place) Since the houses in Geneva have such a poor quality, there are these strict night rules with silence from 22h.

Unfortunately in Geneva nobody seems to care about that. It seems that people with no respect and not following the rules have a lead here.

I use hearing protection now and sleep a little better since then.

I would say, search another apartment. But we all know how hard this is in Geneva. So here is what you could do:

Ask them politely to respect the house rules.

If this doesnt work, write them a letter.

If this doesnt work. go to the regie and ask them to contact your neighbours.

If this doesnt work, ask the regie to do a mediation together with your neighbours.

That should work.
