Even if you offer your services free of charge I think such posts should be in the classifieds, like if I want to give away a sofa for free (for example, not intending to equate your expertise with an old sofa).

my gripe is that i have seen "free" get togethers where advice is served up to glocal members who are in need and in search of accurate and valid information, by other glocal members who are unqualified to disperse this information. "the blind leading the blind"
- caveat emptor -

When I saw Bruce’s post, I couldn’t see what he was getting at. In fact, I thought Bruce was considering promoting himself at some point. Is there a subtle hidden agenda in this thread?
If I try to understand Bruce’s point, I’m sure the moderators would take care of any dubious posts.
If I read David’s message correctly, Oded flies a Typhoon (and I see he flies at night – he’s always on the site) and can launch missiles if they are necessary. Geneva would seem to be free not only from rogue attacks, but the forums too!
Bruce’s topic seems to have been well covered in recent discussions. Do we really need to open this subject again?

I can't speak for Bruce, but I assume his post was a stab at a different post where someone used the forums to promote their business. That other someone then apologized many times publicly for it, promised it wouldn't happen again, and even asked us to delete their thread. But the topic won't die.
So let's move on already, it's getting real old.

It was interesting to have a bit of context to this post.
I still see a blatant publicity attempt on the forum, if he was concerned about the context of what he might post, he didn't actually have to post his advert, he could have just mentioned the theme. This in my view, is asking for people's opinion and thoughts to distract from the issue that he has fully advertised his business on a forum thread. Which then brings me to the conclusion that asking for people's opinion was never an intrest, promotion was the main motivator. Thus whether or not we agree with what he has posted is of no interest to him as long as we read his post - thus he doesn't care what we think about this post.
My comments were in perspective and in context to the post and not on a general appreciation about Bruce as a person.
Although your post is interesting is still does not explain why you took it personally
I agree with Nir as I'm sure you do that this post and topic should be left to rest.
I wish you all the best David and much success in your affairs.

But just to clear up one point. There is no Finance and Money team in Geneva, there is no website, www.financeandmoney.com, I am not a financial advisor , I never have been, and certainly have no intention of being one. This does remind me of a quote attributed to Tony Blair: " I don't make predictions. I never have and I never will."
I think it is possible that some people might have taken things a little too literally.

to be a fun community and a way to meet people and engage in great activities
with like minded people. The forums have also been a great way to
interact and to find out things in the Geneva area.
With this entry it feels like veiled messages and attacks hidden with generic quotes.
Can we stop this negativity. Perhaps just close this thread. This is not going anywhere positive.

I am new here and did not intend my first post to be like this, but your reply to david017 is ridiculous. You throw fuel on all these destructive posts, and attack other while hiding behind big quotes from big people. And then you tell other to not read it if we don't like it, and that everything is a good debate. You miss the point. If you really are a coach or a psychologist, you can surely see that your behavior here is not creating a discussion, but just bad emotions?

“I’ve been following this thread with interest from a distance and so far have refrained from commenting.
David Lawson has asked a very pertinent question to which I have seen no satisfactory reply from the author of this post.
Bruce: What was your intention in posting this thread? You seem to have had some idea in mind but you have not elaborated on it.
Ideas dictate everything. But we have no idea what you had in mind.
What were you thinking of when you posted this thread?
If David has come back time and again in this thread, in my opinion, it’s because we’re all seeking (myself included) clarity, discussion and perhaps closure of the topic at some point with your idea.
Can you please enlighten us Bruce?
Many thanks.”

Nir, I take exception to your stance. From my understanding, we can all openly discuss any subject in this forum.
This is not a “dead horse” for me. And, I’d like an answer. It’s the least Bruce can provide us, as he is the person who posted the thread. If you don’t want conversation on this topic, why on earth didn’t you just delete it when it was posted.
Please clarify to all of us.
I’m beginning to suspect that there is censorship on these forums. It’s important to know if you stand by your previous comments in other threads that in these forums we can have healthy debate. So, I’m not satisfied with your response.
If you’re saying, “drop it” and you’re going to close this thread, then I’ll drop these forums as they’re value is in question if honest questions such as David’s are not permitted to be discussed.
Please be clear about this. I want to know if on glocals we can discussion issues raised with honesty and not just bury things because it suits you personally.
I await your reaction.

"Crack" is an extremely inpolite word to use in this (sexual) context!

What a great thread! It has so much, anger, apology, humor, sex. It was a thoroughly enjoyable read, at times. So Bruce L. obviously you posted the original message to make a point about there being "a fine line" between advertising on the forums (a no-no) and offering friendly advice. And David L. you had and have again, apologised and explained. If it was not intentional then it should be left at that. If it was intentional then there has been enough bad press to conteract the original post.
This is not to say that the discussion shouldn't take place. It should, but it should not be based on David's employee's post.
So in my opinion, either this thread can change to "crossing the line and proposed consequences" or a new thread should be started.
BTW: Hayes I loved your comment about "the brothers". It was extremely well timed to cut the tension.

It seems some people on here expect me to explain myself totally, or failing that seem to have come up with their own idea of what is or was going on in my mind..... well......
I am currently on holiday with my son. Trying to wrestle with the mental workings of a 4 year old is very interesting and fun indeed. Children that age are so black-and-white about everything; at leat within a particular time horizon. They see questions or topics as one dimensional, and answers as singular and complete. They also only see the world really from there own perspective.Obviously ,as most of us get older, that simplicity breaks down as we engage with multi faceted issues, with no simple solutions. The way that each individual is formed makes everyone see a topic from a different standpoint. ( Go and watch the Kurasawa film "Rashomon" if you want to see a masterly dissertation on this subject)
I myself was completely surprised to recieve several messages from people actually looking for financial advice. It just goes to show that the more we know, the less we realise we actually do...
And finally;I am not Scottish, I never have been, and I never, ever will be.....
but that does not mean I will be buying the first round though

It's 2009, England, and we are still uncertain about the Scots. Are we the same? Borthers? Or are we mortal enemies? It's so near, yet so far... The rule of thumb is:
- if a Scotsman does something really good (e.g. run down a track really fast, kick a ball, or be funny on TV) we claim them as British
- if a Scotsman does something bad (like invent antibiotics or lead the empirical movement and write the dreary, picture-free, and wrong Treatise on Human Nature) we dismiss them as Scotch.
I'm unsure about what nationality I should assign to the Mitochondrial Eve Lawson.

Bruce, you should be in marketing! Good one!
Personally, I feel that this is an example of how we are all so capable of working ourselves up instead of concentrating on things that really are paramount....sign of the times I fear. If someone posts such a thread and I feel that it is dishonest then I wouldn't be seeking their advice on much at all. If it didn't offend me and I needed advice then I would probable use that person, because they have the gall to do it. That sums it up for me...back to life......
