A suspicious offer

Hi all,

I'd like to get your advice in the following situation. We've found a chalet to rent for a week. Before signing the contract the owners asked us to pay 30% of the total ammount by sending them a bank check.

Therefore we send the checkwhile we don't have any guaranties in return (the contract is not signed). Can we somehow annul the check in case of the owner won't send us the signed contract?

Thanks.

Hi bemtail

Do you have any written commitment from the challet owners?

I know you didn't sign a contract but I think even an email from the owners saying they need 30% in order to reserve the chalet for you on dates xxx should be enough.

But I'm not a lawyer and have no experience renting challets so I might be totaly wrong.

Good luck

Thanks a lot, I think we gonna encourage them to send us a signed contract first.

Tell them that, if they want, they can include in the contract the clause that you will pay them the 30% within 15 days after the signature of the contract. Id they are honest and only worrying for their money, that should be enough to reassure them.

(And I would rather answer that you don't have bank cheques and that you will pay by bank transfer instead. Easier to track and reclaim in case of problems).
