Accident Insurance -- In plain terms?

Can somebody explain it to me.. I seem to be stoopid :)

From what I read.

The standard compulsary insurance covers ilness and accidents.
Accident insurance is compulsary for children.
Employers pay accident insurance for employees.

Sooo I won't need it because my employer will pay, I need to buy it for the kids and wife (who won't be working).. It's compulsary for the kids but what extra does it provide the wife if it's included in standard cover.??

There is no such thing as "standard" helth insurance. You have the basic insurance "LaMal" + options. The basic health insurence does not cover accidents.

It is mandatory for an employer to provide accident insurance for any employee that works > 8h/month so yes, you will be covered by your employer's insurance but your wife and kids will not be covered, unless your employer is very generous. S you need to take up accident insurance for your wife and kids. Simpel enough?

What you said is pretty much what I thought.. But it's little different to what it says on comparis. There's a little i info button to mouse over "what is accident cover" ..

It says : "Compulsory basic health insurance covers treatment costs in case of illness and accidents."

So comparis is talking bollox then .. Simpel?

You CAN add accident coverage to your basic health insurance, usually for just a few additional CHF per month. So, comparis is right. This does NOT mean that they have the same kind of coverage as the accident insurance though!

Accident insurance covers 100% of treatment (and other) costs (general ward in hospital) linked to an accident (health insurance: covers only 90% and is restricted to treatement costs), and includes a daily benefit/disability pension in case of inability to work because of the accident, as well as a survivors pension for children/partner in case of accidental death (all these are not included in health insurance). All employees in Switzerland (working over 8 hours per week) are automatically insured against work and leisure accidents.

For others (kids, students, housewifes etc.) the insurance is NOT compulsory, but it may be worth it because of the benefits above.
