Advice: Hiking an easy 4000m?

Hi All,

So here is my problem: I love hiking and will feel defeated if I leave Switzerland at the end of the summer without attempting a  challenging alpine climb.  I suppose this is a shot in the dark, but I am curious if anyone has hiked a 4000m and/or would be interested in attempting one next weekend.

I've not done an alpine hike previously, so if anyone has any suggestions about where (1) to rent equipment (rope, crampons) and (2) how much expertise is needed, it would be a huge help. I do not have experience climbing at high altitude, but would love the opportunity to give it a try.  Presently, I am contemplating the Bishorn, as it has lodging at high elevation, which would help for acclimation and would make for a feasible Saturday-Sunday affair.

You will need quite a bit of expertize, and you will not be acclimatised in a weekend.

My advice, take a mountaineering course! They are tremendous fun. Otherwise give the local mountain guide office a call and see what they can offer you.

O, and 4000 is just a number. Why not find something majestic and of the beaten track, it will be a lot less crowded.

Please don't do anything requiring rope and crampons without having learned and practiced this properly. The mountains are dangerous if you don't know what you're doing.

But you can always hire a guide who will do the technical stuff, and judge the weather and the condition of the snow and so on. I recommend doing that.

Not sure if yo0u were the Ryan who called me about the Adula. But we did it.  The glacier was little bit more technical than the Bishorn.  On the way down there was a person on his own coming up but this is not recommended.   You probably step into a small crevasse probably once every 10 outings but the tight rope stops you falling in.  On your own you can go down just 3 metres and be uninjured but stuck and the frightening thing is that nobody can hear you even if they are only a few mwetres away.  On the phone you mentioned you had managed to do a glacier before.  The Bishorn is easy (when my daughter got to the top a couple of weeks ago there was a guy there with an adapted bicycle) and it is possible to hire the gear (Cactus sports) but you cannot hire a rope - you have to buy.

You can alsways ask the 'chef de course' if there is room, saying you want to try it out before committing yourself.  The website allows you to sign up as a non member and i usually post my walks on glocals as well.  Preference is given to members.  Our admin is not the best Did you try to join the Geneva section or the Carouge section.  I am with the Geneva section
