Advice needed: Buy or not a car

Hello!

I would highly appriciate an advice, as I am full of doubts :) Currently I am driving mobility cars, when needed. I am hesitating wether to by or not some cheap car (around 4k CHF).

Currently mobility is almost sufficient for me - I work in just few hundred meters from house, and there are really good trains here :) But my wife if pregnant, and  probably the car will be needed more often (especially when my wife will be giving a birth, I will need to bring her at hospital somehow).

I work in Switzerland, already 2 years, and probably at the end of the year I will move out to my native country, and for sure I will not be able to bring the car there.

Just wondering,  in case If buy the car how easy it will be to sell it at the end of the year?   Does anyone have an advice is it worst to by a car for just a half a year- 1 year?

Thanks,

Regards, Sasha

Hi Sasha,

Just keep in mind that here in Geneva both parking and insurance are quite expensive. So take into account that you will be paying about 400 CHF (total) a month for both.

Hi Sasha,

regarding your future fatherhood, good luck, I hope everything will be all right with the birth. And when the time comes, you can call a taxi. First births are not so quick so you should have tiem to get on and about the get to the maternite. So call a cab, its such a stress driving when the wife is under labour, and at worst you call an ambulance if things are happening to quick.

As for buying a car, I doubt you will need a car in the early childhood of your future childs life. Kids that age can easilly be pushed around in prams and such. For more mobility, think rather buying a electric bike with a stroller. Less costs and more flexible to get around in a city. than with a car.

And a s CH K posted, it can be expensive just renting a parking space, let along the insurance costs and maintenance. A car will age even if you are not driving it more than once a week.

Unless you really think you need a car (if you live in the sticks) I suggest not to buy one if you are living in a city.

I'd also recommend not buying a car. It's far too expensive, bike is better choice.

Buying a car for less than a year is not worth it. The insurance and parking alone will probably cost the same as what you are paying at mobility and then there will be extra charges and you might have a hard time selling it at a reasonable price when you are leaving.
