All-color-sheep Campaign: should we do it?
All,

The discussion about the Black Sheep campaign made it clear that a lot of glocals feel the original sheep poster is offensive.

Wayne brought up the idea to create our own non-political campaign, showing how sheep of all color can just have fun together...(-:

I wanted to probe and collect some feedback from everyone about this idea.

The idea, in short is this:

THE OBJECTIVE
Express our view, in a non-political view, that we think all 'sheep', regardless of fur color, could live happily together. And ofcourse, this is done with a nod towards the black sheep campaign.

THE IDEA (Wayne's the master mind, I am just writing it down!)
- we create a web site with a name focused on something like 'www.all-color-sheep.ch' or something like that
- the web site will include a visual of many colorful sheep enjoying life (what do sheep do to enjoy life?).
- we'll have some short text, in english, french, German, and Italian, explaining whaht we're trying to do.
- we'll allow all visitor to leave comments on the site, and to send the site link to others.

We will ask volunteer glocals to design the visual and build the site, and I think we can make it happen.

What think?

Nir

The posters are being taken down so you're a bit late. Anyway, as I said in the other thread : IT'S A BAD IDEA. I wish you would all let go for the sake of decency (what's left of it)

... that glocals.com uses a black chicken to mock the ones who don't put their pic in their profile?

“way up high, and the dreams that you dare to, oh why, oh why can’t I?”

We should celebrate and talk about what we have learned. A rainbowsheep parade/walk can be a good way of celebrating, reflecting, and showing solidarity and inclusiveness of mankind.

What have we learned? In the previous thread, some Glocalers believe the poster is racism, other convinced it is just balcksheeping “foreign criminals” nothing to do with racism!

No matter which camp you believe, "Deliberately criminalizing a particular group of people based on either COLORS or NATINALITY (Foreign or National) by a powerful political party is unethical, unacceptable and absolutely condemnable!

“Foreigners commit more crime than Swiss nationals so kicking them out! Swiss men also commit more crime than Swiss women. What are we going to do “SPECIALLY’ with Swiss men? No, we are not going to do anything specially for Swiss men.

What decency has left of this balcksheeping/scaogoatping campaign depends on how we continue to be concerning human rights issues.

What have I learned apart from knowing many thoughtful people and posts in this discussion? From Lady Justice.

Lady Justice blindfolding herself….only look at the evidence of a crime not what kind of people committing it since she knows it does not matter …since she believes before laws EVERYONE is equal and should be treated equally. She looks at evidence not people (no matter colors or nation of origin). "Justice should be meted out objectively, free from either fear or favor, regardless of the color, religion, identity, careless of either power or powerless, and country of origin in our case."

How far we are from Lady Justice’s inspiration is how far we are from a real justice society!

p.s Have registered two campaign websites rainbowsheep.org and rainbowsheepcampaing.org as promised. Am content if they are no longer needed.

Could you pls explain why it would be a bad idea to do a quick poster of sheep of all colors living happily together, and posting it on a web site to explain this is how we see thing?

If you are walking down the road, and a dog starts barking at you, you dont bark back to the dog. You just continue.

An anti campaign will make them think that they had been noticed and their message is heard, which is what they want, to be noticed and heard.

ciao

I am just glad that the posters are now down. Think there are better, more original and sustainble ways to counter racism and promote value for diversity than adopting the UDC's offensive images as a theme.
Shocking was their presence, the visual impact, and that is harder to relay in their absence, to those who ask what all the rainbow sheep are all about...
Also, I feel it that now the sheep posters are absent it would be too much like paying hommage to the UDC's original theme with the rainbow ones. Countering that image in their absence loses its impact.

What gives anyone the RIGHT to jude my COUNTRY???...don't throw the first stone...!

Friends,

this is what I was going to say - (backing Archie up) what gives anyone of you the RIGHT to judge SWITZERLAND and our politics???

First of all, do you know our values, our traditons...and, and...do you know that we are a democratic country with the freedom of press...and, and...

What gives you the RIGHT to judge Switzerland??? Lots of you should be grateful that you are able to live here...you are a GUEST in my country, this means you act and behave according to our rules!!! (Full stop)

I don't like Blocher and his party - but we SWISS people have the chance to vote...Just go for it - and vote for the RIGHT party!

Guys, just think, you ALL should be grateful - that your are able to live in one of the best country's in the world - Switzerland! ( I will not go in to wages, life style, expenses paid by the Co. - this is something you have do deal with and ask your yourself ;-)

The day you know our values, our traditions...I'm more than happy to discus any issues...

In the meantime - enjoy living in Switzerland and make the best out of it as long as you can ;-)

Should my friends list shrink - hey, this is life...

I'm SWISS and I'm proud to be SWISS!!!

Have a lovely Sunday everyone!

It's what i think too...
The best thing we could do, is to organize events about our country,
mixing swiss and expatriates...like visiting swiss places, participating to swiss events etc...that can be cool to do the "turistic guide", but that will be the best way to communicate...and to show that not all swiss are the same !

Many people here want to meet swiss persons, but it's not easy, cause some swiss stay in their group of friend. But us, swiss of glocals, we want to meet and exchange with others people ! so that's the opportunity for everybody to exchange !

I think it would be great and enlightening not to mention fun to learn more about Swiss places, history, and tradition. Last year I was lucky enough to go to Martigny to see the "Battle of the Queens" (cows bashing each other) in an old Roman ampitheatre. I also got to see the religious Relics at a famous church in the Valais (I forget the name now). There are many fun things to learn about here and our Swiss hosts (those who care to) can provide insights and suggestions.

Second, the analogy between homeowner and citizen of a country is not helpful. Homeowners have rules, nations have constitutions. The Swiss constitution guarantees freedom of speech and human rights. It does say that foreigners can be expelled if they are considered a national security risk. Does it criticism (snarky or balanced) threaten national security?

Expats are here for many reasons. And many of us have served humanitarian causes in Indonesia, DRC, and in the furthest reaches of the world. Not everyone comes here because it looks good on the resume. Many of us actually like and believe in the work we do. Geneva and Switzerland host many international organizations to which nearly every citizen of every country in the world has made a financial contribution through payment of taxes. We expats therefore have a vital interest in human rights in Switzerland.

Diversity is strength. Having fun with our gracious hosts will encourage that. That's why I joined Glocals.

is Saint Maurice. I was there last weekend for the Mass and Procession for the Feast Day of Saint Maurice and the Martyrs. It was amazing. And Calmy-Rey was there, too. Every September 22nd, they have the procession with the relics. It's worth going to, I think. And the village is very charming as well. Bit of an early morning, though, if you're taking the train from Geneva.

but how odd, wanting to prevent people from thinking and implying they have no
clue what they're talking about just because they happen to be non-Swiss, how perplexing.

Yes, only the Swiss have the right to vote - but - people have every right to express their opinions and their thoughts on a matter if they so choose.

So, since you're open for discussions, when would you like to discuss the Bergier commission or any other related topic?

If this website evolves from a forum to promote community discussion into a organization with it’s own political agenda, I’ll be following the SwissKiss move and leaving. There is no way I’m going to be a member if it means that my participation infers that I somehow conform to YOUR political statements.

If there are a group of members who’d like to make a statement against the UDC, the war in IRAQ, NAFTA or Chinese occupation of Tibet….that should be done outside of this community because otherwise, placing the ‘glocal’ logo on any posters, websites or t-shirts to appear in the future, implies that all 13,000 are in agreement where clearly, from the already heated debate, not all of us are.

I agree that Glocals should have no political agenda and should promote community discussion.

The previous dispute to which some people are referring was spoken about and dealt with very effectively by the moderators.

If some people don't want to move on, that's different. And if some people want to comment upon the affair without having read all of the exchanges which extended over several threads over the past week, they are free to.

Again, the Swiss constitution provides for freedom of speech and fundamental human rights.

Yes, the Bergier report was 2002. Here in Geneva in 2007, there have been a number of very worrying events:

a) Swiss, French and British neo-nazis attacked a group of Africans just near the Gare Cornavin;
b) the synagogue in Champel was torched;
c) Aobut 300 cars in the Plainpalais area had swastikas scratched on them.

Jewish or other denomination, Swiss or expatriate, those who are concerned with keeping their community safe have the right and duty to respond. This may include chats on Glocals.

If someone feels personally judged by what the Swiss themselves write, so be it. That is criticism from the inside.

Being married to Swiss gives me the right to be here and entitles me to citizenship after a prescribed period of time. That is the law.

Everyone here has the right to respond or not to a private email exchange. Such a private exchange was undertaken in order not to fan the flames on the general discussion site. If such an email is not taken that way, that is not within my control.

There are many other wonderful features of Glocals. Glocals serves as a fantastic forum for exchanges of many kinds. That is all to the better.

Grandfather,

Overt nationalism needs to be satirised and I will do so whenever I wish. It's a nice interpretation that you've put on Swiss's words but I'm not feeling a lot of welcome from her comments and if by 'consideration' you mean 'acquiesance', then you're right.

I wasn't invited to Switzerland, the international organization that employs me here operates outside of Swiss law and the fact that it is in Geneva is irrelevant to me. I came for the work, not the fondue or pretty mountains.

Your Young Friend

P.S. Indonesia is a lovely place with great people...you should visit

P.P.S. Good luck with your resume

If you weren't on an uncontrolled rampage and if you had stopped a minute or two to reflect you would have perhaps noticed that it relates to certain values and traditions that you had mentioned you'd be happy to discuss.
The implications of this report are still valid today.

Glocals prides itself on being a forum that advocates free speech and, for the most part, it has managed to achieve that by allowing a platform to voice a variety of opinions. That is entirely different from using the “Glocal” community to promote a specific agenda whether it be fighting racism, AIDS awareness or global warming.

For those members who want to organize a ‘non-political campaign’ (an oxymoron in my opinion) by hosting a website, wearing t-shirts or having a sit in….by all means do that but ON YOUR OWN. Post it as an “activity” where the understanding is that not everyone in this community advocates doing it.

My concern is that the administrators of this forum are the ones promoting this idea and it makes me question whether the “Glocal” community as a whole will be used to represent it. ie will the term ‘glocal’ be on these t-shirt, website etc. If Glocals becomes synonymous with particular political/social cause then, as a member, I am advocating it. I should not have to worry about what ‘campaign’ the Glocal administrators have decided to participate in this week and whether or not it represents my views.

The last time I checked, Glocals was not a religion or political party.

glocals isn't political, and we go out of our way to remain non political.

If i used 'we' to refer to a glocals activity, implying that I am refering to all members, I apologise.
