An open letter on moderate a forum
Friends, Admins, and Forum.

That statement about 450 reads but only 6 posters is so far off the mark it hurts. Those were not 450 individual people. My reverse-engineering suggests that the counter increments one time when a single clicks on on the thread, but not subsequent clicks. Until a new post is added. After that, each user can increment the read count again... so that statement indicates that you don't even know how your own forum works. If there were 10 posters and 40 posts, then it's likely that several hundred of those reads came from us!

So if that 450 vs. 6 was really the crux of your argument then it was simply based upon a mis-understanding of your own software!

It seems like the approach to moderating here is :

Step 1: An observation. There are forums on the Internet and all of them have some kind of moderator.

Step 2: An assumption. All forums need to be moderated

Step 3: A course of action. We're going to moderate our forums.

Here's a bit more mathematics. If there were 40 posts on a thread, then let's assume that each one takes 2 minutes to write. And assuming that each of the 10 posters read the whole thing, then that's probably 10 minutes more per person. You're looking at at least 3 person-hours right there. So to erase everything shows a complete lack of respect for your posters. The people that generate forum content for the site you are trying tirelessly to promote.

If, as a moderator, you see a thread dragging off track, you first post a warning on the the thread

Post 1
Heh, my first ever premature post.... how embarrassing. Anyway, back to it.

Continuing. If the thread continues to be pulled off course, then you :

1. lock it.

2. start a new thread. and post a link from the previous one to the new one explaining why.

If this is too much trouble, then i suggest you find a moderator that has the time.

What you do not do is say "I'm going to delete your content now because it's not what I want". That's hideously arrogant.

Post 4
All,

First, a recap of what sparked this post:
24 hours ago I posted this thread about Sat's party moving from public to private. The post got 2 on-topic posts, and then quickly moved to around 20-25 off-topic 1-line banters. Since the topic is important and I wanted to avoid it getting lost in the banter, I removed the off-topic banter posts.

Second, to how we should have handled it, in an ideal world:
yea, Hayes' suggestion is great, and I fully agree with it. But it requires a more ideal world where we (we=me and siteAdmin) have the time and resources to follow the full process everytime we delete posts (about 20 times each day). In the same ideal world, we also wouldn't have off-topic posts in the forums.

Third and last: how we handle it in the sub-optimal reality:
It's not ideal, but when there's heavy off-topic posts, especially on imporant threads, we just have to move fast and remove them.

So that's the full story...I hope one day we'll be able to have more time / people on the case.

Post 5
Well thanks; but I genuinely wasn't after a show of hands. Sorry about the way I assed up the posts. I didn't even get the thread title right (that was when I made a keyboard shortcut that lead to the posting disaster). But I was proper pissed off (as usual). Anyway... well, what else were you expecting(?):

First, a recap of what sparked this post:
Please don't presume to know what sparked my posts. What sparked it was an ancient deletion of 4 posts; probably a year ago. What brought those sparks back to mind, and added a little gas, was the complete removal of Orchydia's first LOVE thread (on the grounds of a single poster saying "I think this thread should be locked"; which anyway was ridiculous). What you quote was simply what made my finger reach for the button.

Indeed you did. If it were purely an informational post; why not make it sticky and lock it immediately? Why not use your forum software?

Nir_ (31/07/2009)

The post got 2 on-topic posts,
If that's true, then they were both by you. Because the three posts that remain on the locked version are all yours. So either you're the only one that contributed; or you removed the content to which you're referring.

Nir_ (31/07/2009)

and then quickly moved to around 20-25 off-topic 1-line banters.
In the post you made immediately before removing, you quoted 40. The numerical accuracy is largely irrelevant, however, in light of the fact that more than 2 of those posts were made by you! Either you disapprove of the off-topic banter or not. Some days it's hard to figure out which.

Well, see 2 of the above points really: either emphasise the importance with your own forum functionality, or don't fuel the fire. One or the other and I probably wouldn't be writing this, but both....

Excellent! And of course you agree! It's great in an ideal world! Imagine how amazing it would be in the non-ideal world you bring up next.

That's terrible. I'm guessing, however, that this is a moot point since the new site is scheduled for release, when?... now? I can only assume you will switch to an efficient forum infrastructure. There are literally tens of them out there. Free software. For all intents and purposes bug-free.

Nir_ (31/07/2009)

In the same ideal world, we also wouldn't have off-topic posts in the forums.
Yeeaaaah.... Almost. If your ideal world directly equates to the world's least interesting forum. You spent half your time promoting off-topicism yourself. Please don't ask me to elaborate.

Alternatively, think of the most interesting 5 posters from the last year. And consider whether you would even remember those names had they stayed "on topic".

Just have to move fast and remove them? I guess that means contribute to it yourself, do nothing for 4 hours, let something interesting build up then "move fast" and remove them.

You could, you know, well, how do I put it? You could have created a sticky announcement thread.

I'm not sure I follow. I (admittedly, very badly) made a point. You made the claim of silly, childish posters vs. overworked administrators and the excuse. I pointed out why I feel that that that's a bit of a cop-out. It feels a bit more like "I can't be bothered" rather than not being productive.

Hi Hayes

Nir is offline (dealing with party logistics) and I don't want you to think you are being ignored so I'll try to clarify.

You made your point, Nir made his claim, you pointed out all the flaws in Nir's claim, and Nir conceeded to your superior logic.

In the future, we will try to adopt your moderation reccomendations when possible.

It's not that we can't be bothered.  More like no point in arguing once the point has been made and accepted.

Thanks

Oded

Maaan, Some people really have nothing better to do but chat on the forum posting off-topic meaningless comments.

I'm totally with Nir on cutting off-topic replys from informative postings.

Maybe the best option would be indeed to create a new "Off-topic" section and move there threads, which went off-topic and have no more informative value. It's a fair solution for not deleting them directly.

Those who like / have time for a cheat-chat chat would have their place and those who need an information would stick to other sections.

Anushka, I disagree!  Half the fun of reading the forums.... correction, THE fun of reading the forum is seeing who's said what in reply, off topic or not and if it is off topic, finding out what provoked it.    Seeing how the conversation evolved is the interesting part but to achieve that, ALL the posts need to be visible.

If someone is posting something purely for informational purposes, then they should lock it after they post it. That way you'd be spared from reading "meaningless comments". Although this does provoke my curiousity to your definition of meaningless comment. Maybe I'll start another thread for that one.

Your post also implies (to me..) your dislike of chit-chat. Personally, I believe chit-chat is a very important part of life. I don't think every waking moment of ones life can or should be spent in meaningful conversation only. Well, on second thought I suppose it could be but maaan that would be veerry boring!

In my opinion there are two "best options" and this is neither of them. One is to, like other forums, have an Announcements section. The drawback is that generally they generate very little traffic and nobody ever bothers to read them. The only forum I ever bother to read is the General one. The other obvious alternative is this one:

Exactly. Write it, lock it, and pin it to the top. That functionality is there for a reason. After the event, unpin it and let is slide down. Everybody's happy.

True, you both Isa & Lannah are right: ... we all lead different lifestyles - we all use Glocals for different reasons, some prefer to post rather than hunt or be hunted

And as much as you enjoy chit-chat, I like on-topic comments sticking to the subject. ;) "General" doesn't really specify what is the nature of conversation.
I like the proposal " Have an Announcements section, Which after all comes to the same point as creating "Off-topic" section and keep "General" for on-topic discussion. Doesn't matter how you call it as long as the purpose is specified.

I would "bother" to read it regularly. ;)

Write it, lock it, and pin it to the top - Is not a perfect solution because "on-topic" comments to "announcements" might bring valuable info as well.

Re: An open letter on moderate a forum

Hmmm.. seems that this is almost getting off topic to the definitions of "general" and "random" :D

The story has 2 sides:

1.

Yes off topic is fun and needed to keep it alive. Without threads going off topic this forum would be nearly dead!

2.

It is very anoying for people who are really looking for information to find that info between all the crap!

Solution?

The responsability lies at the people who wants to go off topic on purpose. Those people must realise on which topic they can go "off" and on which not. The beautifull pictures by Whovian for example (well done btw) is almost screaming for some comments which are blowing the humour into this forum. Perfect. On the other hand genuine informative topics are on the forum for a reason.... and guess.... exactly... to inform people :D

I think it would be much appreciated by a lot of forum readers that the threads on which people want to go off topic are selected a little bit more carefull.

Everybody happy, right? (this sounds almost like the golden compromise...hahaha)

PS: Admin... indeed please lock in stead of delete

Indeed. But it's actually worse than that. A dead forum is an unread forum. And then the information would go nowhere. People that generate content also generate precious page impressions but there's also the momentum factor with all the others.

Sufficient solutions have been presented, I think. It's obvious. The forum software has certain functionality for a reason. I would say one of the more important messages would be for administrators not to get involved with non-informational aspects of the thread, chuck a few "jokes" here and there -- the standard Google Image Search -- and encourage the off-topicism. Then go "oops, that's not what i meant to do", and pull everything.

Well, maybe you would.

But here's an example about Announcement-only forums. On this version of Glocals, there is an Announcements-like forum entitled "News from the SiteAdmin" ("Here's what we're up to behind the scenes"). It's regarded as so important that it's one from the bottom of the list. Now, in the General forum right now, there are the following 3 threads:
 1. This Sunday - New glocals Site Launch

 2. glocals New Site - Login and check it out
 3. 1000 non-active members deleted
All of these really belong, IMHO, in "News from the Site Admin". In any case, they don't belong in a forum with the subheading "Random questions / thoughts / ideas, that don't fit in any of the other forums". Presumably they are where they are because the News... forum generates next to zero traffic (the last post was in May).
