Animal Welfare

Does anyone know where I can get information on the regulations, standard practices for animal husbandry and slaughter in Switzerland. I know that Switzerland has strict guidelines on animal farming but I'd like to know what 'strict' actually means. All I have to go on when purchasing meat are Coop labels like 'Naturafarm' and 'MSC'.

I found Protection Swiss des Animaux PSA but when I see those elephants walking around Plainpalais, I also wonder what PSA does exactly.

Thanks for any info.

You can start here by going to the Coop site and reading about the Naturafarm label. They will give you the names of the laws and then you can look those up. They are mostly available on the admin.ch website. There are about three or four of them.

In meantime, here is a brochure the Protection suisse des animaux put out comparing farming practices of Switzerland vs "the EU".

Could you explain what actually bothers you about elephants walking around Plainpalais, please?

Perhaps you have never seen working elephants in a country such as, for example, Sri Lanka.
