Anybody tried this French course?

I'm moving to VD in a week or so was reading (badly) through the local commune website .. Looks like they have a couple of French courses to 'help foriegners integrate' .. They seem really cheap unless i totally misunderstand it.

The read and and write one is probably not good for me, i wanna talk mostly.

Commune site here :

And courses :

I have never been to either course but based on the website: The first course (lire et ecrire) says it is for people who can speak French already but cannot read or write, so it doesn't sound like what you are after.

I haven't tried courses yet, and I'm not sure either whether to go with the cheap ones or the expensive ones. Have you looked into the Migros courses in your area because they offer speaking based classes.

And I just wanted to throw in this link which is a compilation of all the French courses offered in Geneva and Geneva area.

Thanks! I am B1/B2 right now without having taken classes, but I still have a very hard time speaking. I'm hoping for a class that'll really take me to that advanced level.

What I really want is just a speaking course.. Or mainly a speaking course.

My office is english speaking (officially) so all the work stuff is in english, but socially it's french and obviously everything out of work is french.

I'm not bad with reading already, letters from the bank / insurance etc, I know what it means and if i get stuck I take it to the office.

I just wanna be able to join in better at the afterwork beers instead of have the team revert to english for me.  If I could find a course like that to get me started, I'd tell the people at work to stop speaking english and that would immerse me in it.

I think to learn how to speak the best approach may be a private teacher, and their flexibility may make it easier for you.

I can also recommend the Michel Thomas series to get a quick start in the language. Here's a great video about him and his method. You can order them from Amazon.

Besides obviously practicing speaking and learning from making a bunch of mistakes, you should also make the effort to listen to French shows as much as possible with the subtitles.  After doing this constantly for several months, I've definitely noticed a huge improvement in my ability to understand French conversations (except when they speak extremely fast).

Helto,

I can recommend you school www.ifage.ch  at Geneva. They have really enthousiastic and well performed team. I did both English and French courses and I will back for German as well.
