Apartment block getting 2 new levels on top - advice please!

We received a non-informative letter to advise that there would be something happening to our building. Turns out that our building and those two adjoining will be getting two new floors, starting in September. I am assuming at least 2 years of work.  We have a small baby, and I work at home. Based on past construction nearby, I can say without doubt that it will be unliveable hell.

Our regie is...uhhh...stereotypical. They sent a letter last year asking for feedback, to which we replied. Their response was basically, "nothing is happening so shut the F up". Then we got the letter from the GE relevant department.

Has anyone had any experience with this, and therefore any advice? I plan to contact the regie and asloca, but first-hand glocals stories would be of interest. Rental reductions, moving, what we could reasonably request etc.

Thank you

Not being helpful. But just curious if you would put up with "unlivelable hell" for a reduced rent. My humble openion would be to ask to move out without conditions. If you want to push it a little bit furthur ask to move back after construction is finished for the same rent as you are paying now.

No I don't want to put up with unlivable hell. However, just because I feel it will be that way, doesn't mean that the regie will agree with, or admit to that.

It will cost thousands to move, and most equivalent rentals in our area are 1.5 - 2K per month above what we pay. If we can get it. You know that you can apply for a place, but it doesn't mean you get it, depending on the mood of the regie.

Asloca can be hit and miss with their advice, so hence why I was interested to know what another 'etrangere' might have experienced.  But thanks for your ideas, it helps.

Having been through something similar for an extended period a couple of years ago, I would strongly advise you to move if you can.  You're almost certainly entitled to a rent reduction for the period of disturbance, but it won't compensate for the loss of your sanity.  Swiss builders are incredibly slow and the only tools they have are hammer-drills and power saws.  The way that they normally add a new storey is to mould it in concrete and then reshape it all with drills. Oh, and they communicate entirely by shouting.

If your regie has a portfolio of properties there may be one that they can relocate you to at no cost.  As always: get ASLOCA to negotiate for you.

Good luck.

Thank you so much. You gave me a good belly laugh, especially at the "reshape it all with drills". Except that it's true, so now I am crying.

I appreciate the advice.
