Are There Really Military Generals on Skype?

Frequently I receive a request on Skype asking to be added as friends..... and these people all claim they are NATO generals or US military generals currently on mission in countires such as Syria...... They even post a photo in military uniform. Quite often they list themselves as from the US and a few other countries. When they write though, they seem to be in European time zone. Their English does not sound like native English. What do these people expect to get from this type of on-line contact? Are they so bored that they just want to chat on-line? Why they have to pretend they are military generals? I do not believe a military general would get on-line and randomly chat with an on-line stranger, am I right?

My guess is that they are very keen to discuss the Swiss vote to curb immigration with you. Laughing

But seriously: there are a lot of webcam-based scams, most of which involve the perpetrators using faked and rather fuzzy video feeds of the person they are impersonating.  They will put some time into chatting and befriending you and then ask you to help them out with something financially; often something relatively cheap like fifty dollars for a new webcam.  It's not much to you, but it all adds up for them, since they do it with lots of people.

You can catch them out by asking them to perform specific actions while on camera, such as jumping up and down or waving.  They are probably on to this ruse by now though, so you should ask them to show you a copy of today's newspaper, which is tough for them to have canned video of.

I never chatted with them; I just wrote a few lines in exchange. From their writing, I could tell they are not from the US..... as stated. Could it be that even their photo in military uniform with a US flag be a fake one, someone else's photo? They wrote they were commander of NATO (or US) troops assigned to Syria, Afghanistan, ..... Could military personnel use Skype like that on a military base?

It seems that there are three versions of this scam,

You are either supposed to:

- Fall in love with the guy (and therefore send money)

- Feel sympathyy for the guy (and therefore send money)

- Wish to help the guy sneak a large amount of cash out of the country he is stationed in (and therefore send money)

Personally I'd only fall for option 3, love and sympathy aren't worth so much as $10,000,000 in combat diamonds;-)
