We asked our partners at MentalFitness to write a short article for GoL about daily life problems that most people face at some point or another.
They chose to write an article on the topic of tough relationships, and the difficulties in deciding if to 'stay or leave'.
This article is NOT a deep solve-it-all piece; rather, it covers the key difficulties and why most people can't decide what to do.
See the article (and then come back here to comment!)
I've been in that place before, and it ain't nothing nice...
All comments welcome.
Thanks to Isabel of MentalFitness for the article!

... superficial answers.
But if you want to go ahead with your life and grow up as the person you may be, you'd better start thinking much more seriously to what you want and start building it, against all odds.
The worst of odds is always yourself, mate, and the fears you'll always have of change, of choices and of giving up all alternatives to what you chose.
When it involves two persons all this doesn't multiply by two (x=y*2): it is elevated to its square (x=y*y).
But if you can build it in two persons and keep on building it the reward is also much bigger.
Over all if you already made choices that are a bond ahead: moving in together -maybe from different cities-,... getting married,... having kids... Those are choices that make you make a bond ahead, but require an higher and higher price, if you freak out and want to step back. And usually it's not worth the price, over all if you're paying it to give up all you wanted and all you have built.
There is a secret man: if you surrender at the first problems, you'll never make a step ahead, you'll never build more than what you have and you'll never become more than what you are and one day you'll look back and see only regrets and messes left unsolved.
I read the article.
Honestly, I rarely read such a load of superficial BS, presented as a professional help.
That kind of (extremely superficial) advise is suitable for teenagers that must learn to say "stop", not for adults who should be able to say "Let's go ahead".
You know I'm not a moralist. I'm not preaching the good word, nor any other BS and I'll always fight for the right to divorce and solve civilizedly an irrecuperable situation.
But "After 11 coaching sessions" you can stop the relation you have with the hottie you met two months ago, not a serious relation with somebody with whom you were building something meant to last.
Sorry for the (very) straight answer, but two people I knew died far too early during last week and I'm in a gloomy mood, not suitable for watching my words.

And than go for it.
From your previous post I understand you are having an affair with a colleague.
That's like "the hotty you've been dating for two months".
If it's not working, thank him and tell him it's over.
We were discussing about a husband, a wife, the mother/father of your children... somebody you've been living with for years... when you cannot really handle it as a short term relation and also your emotional involvement (and the one of the other person) is much stronger and more important than the passion for a new relation.

Just because someone says they are having a relationship with someone at work, doesn't mean they are having an affair. I've known/know people who are married and work in same place. But that isn't the point.
Finishing a relationship isn't easy, proven by people staying even when they are in an abusive one. The biggest problem is fear (of the unknown, being alone, making a mistake). Yes I agree, you have to make a choice, life is short and you should try to be honest with yourself and the other person. If a relationship is making you feel bad, if it isn't going anywhere, if you stop respecting the other person, if you don't love them anymore try to be strong and get out. It is only fair to both people involved. If there are children it is more difficult of course. But then again it is always a matter of respect for all those involved. I think down deep we all know our limits and we should try never go beyond them. Don't want to drive everybody insane do you?
Whatever god, gods or no gods you believe or not believe in, believe and respect the value of the human being. Yours and the other person involved, be brave and bite the bullet (or at least try). Your friends and family will be out there to support you :-)

I was just guessing that if she was married with the man... or had children together... or were living together... the problem wouldn't be that he "works in the office aside".
I didn't write "affair" meaning anything bad. I only understood from what she wrote that she was not talking of a lifetime relation.
Did I understand wrong?

All is fair in love and war - or to be a realist NOTHING is fair about love OR war! The best you can hope for in each is to have respect and dignity and leave as few casualties behind as possible.
With all the talk about humans not meant to be monogamous creatures and that spreading our seed is in our nature...I'm a big skeptic of that, because at the end of the day are we really happier being "free" of commitment. Is the pasture really greener on the other side?
Before my Father died he said the biggest regret of his life was divorcing my mother. Married 27 years and he left her and 5 kids for a blonde bimbo 20 years his junior.
It is difficult to determine if people leave a relationship because it was harmful or hurtful or if people just run when the going gets tough or they get (what seems to be) a better deal. Love is tough. Marriage is tough. Commitment is tough. Anyone who says differently is reading too many fairytales. In a world where we are looking for the next best thing, it is often easier to give up than work for something that might be worth keeping?
In my opinion...There are no rules. You know the answer deep down and that is what you should follow. The heart knows what the mind cannot understand.

Hi Katri.
Religion is a great topic to discuss on the forums.
But a discussion about religion does not belong in a thread about relationships.
Just open a new thread about religion, and let the opinions fly...

but .. we had some good discussions going on yesterday. and frankly I don't remember what has been said, how it started and what we wrote, but it took me some time and effort. And now is gone, and if we wanna keep talking about it, we have to report everything and start from scratch, and in my experience (I tried that a couple of times) the new conversation is not as succesfull cause everyone is fed up with having to basically re-write what they already argued .. to move on.
Being provocative here, but if the issue is that those post (and there were quite a few of them) were off topic ... why didn't you guys copy pasted them in a new thread on religion? Is it really that bad? Can it be done next time instead then just removing stuff?
Vale - having a good debate and now not in the mood to start from scratch

Being provocative here, but if the issue is that those post (and there were quite a few of them) were off topic ... why didn't you guys copy pasted them in a new thread on religion? Is it really that bad? Can it be done next time instead then just removing stuff?

Re-heated discussions are never quite the same. Too bad, it was an interesting one after a long time of rather quiet forums. Can we get a warning next time so we can move the discussion under a different heading? At least it wasn't OT for the forum as it is the "general" forum...

I tried to create a new thread about Religion with all of the deleted posts.
Its a bit messy, but better than deleting them all.

That mutual trust and committment which people make to each other is the key. What I hate is one person ready to commit and the other one holding the green button and not deciding. Or one person deciding what a committment is and the other expected to comply.
