Assurance RC + ménage - termination?

Dear All,

I would be grateful for your advice. I took out assurance combinée RC + ménage in October 2012 when I started renting a flat here in Geneva and have made no claim so far. My insurance company has just sent me their invoice for this year's (2014) contributions (late, because they initially sent it to the wrong address). However, my work contract ends in March and I will then be moving out of the country. Should I inform the company now or is it preferable to wait until March to let them know (in order to avoid this information affecting my cover)?

Many thanks,

Karen.

Hi Karen!

I am not native here, but from what I know, I believe you should let them know asap. Some may require 2 month advance notice if you discontinue or switch. In your case, however, it is due to your job situation, you have a good reason not to continue with the insurance. You should call the company and find out their policy. If their staff does not sound nice, discontinue the call, and call back again. You will get a different staff who may be very nice. Always better to verify the info. you have got.

Since you have received the bill, you should not wait. If necessary, you should explain your situation. It seems your coverage runs till your time to leave, which works out perfect for you. Why should you worry about coverage? You have paid for coverage till March, why shouldn't the company cover you till end of your contract?

Good luck!

Write a letter to inform the insurance company that you are moving abroad.  Then send them proof of the move (which youget when you deregister from your commune. i.e. the Controle des Habitants.

I have changed my RC several times and all I needed to do was write a letter telling them that I will be cancelling at the end of the current contract. the You will still be covered for the year in progress though.

Tell them now that you will leave in march, via registered letter. This step will not effect your coverage until march.

since they work on an annual base, th insurance will still ask you to pay coverage for the full year, but they will cancel your contract on end march and reimburse you for the period of April to december

Thanks Jen, Michelle, Marcy and Nir for your valuable advice. I'll call my insurance company tomorrow to let them know and back it up with a registered letter.

All the best,

Karen.
