BBC News: Swiss 'gigolo' in blackmail trial
A Swiss man accused of seducing several rich women in order to swindle them out of millions of dollars is due to go on trial in the German city of Munich.

Helg Sgarbi - nicknamed by the media as the Swiss Gigolo - faces up to 10 years in prison for fraud and extortion.

His most prominent victim was Susanne Klatten, the heiress of the German car manufacturer BMW.

Prosecutors say Mrs Klatten gave Helg Sgarbi nearly $9m, but went to the police after he tried to blackmail her.

Mrs Klatten, a married business tycoon who owns a 12.5% stake in BMW, also said he secretly videoed them having sex in a Munich hotel [a Holiday Inn (!!!) according to other reports] and threatened to make the tape public if he did not receive another $18m.

But instead of giving away more of her fortune, the reclusive 46-year-old mother-of-three went to the police.

The BBC's Steve Rosenberg in Munich says there is a huge amount of media attention on the trial, which is being described as one of the most remarkable and sensational in German judicial history.

It is believed that Mrs Klatten, who normally shies away from publicity, could testify if Mr Sgarbi does not confess to the alleged crimes.

Six years jail, probably no parole.

Money still unaccounted.

Lovely.

Actually it is most probably buried in Italy where the "film maker" lives. They found some of the money (buried) but only a small part. There must be lots because there were several very rich woman in the scheme.

Maybe some day the whole story will come out in a film. Stay tuned.

The guy is clearly a bad crook, but I have to ask myself what's his secret...I have a hard enough time just getting 1 woman to have sex with me. Yet the guy was able to get many many women to have sex with him, AND to pay him millions! What am I doing wrong?!?

Trevor:

You better get in line for that job opening...Right behind me!

Staff in five-star hotels might actually have known her.

The staff there probably didn't even know her - the rooms were most likely always booked on his name.

Before this incident, she avoided media-attention almost completely.

I don't read the yellow-press, but AFAIK, she rarely made any public appearances at the usual occasions (Munich has a lot of these...).

Just to give you an idea: she met her husband while working at a BMW factory under a false name (she didn't want any kind of special treatment) and only told him after weeks of seeing him who she really was - she wanted to make make sure, he really loved her, not her money.

I would have expected the ladies in the group to express some real support for her decision to come forward. It took some real "balls" to do so given what she had to loose in terms of face.

You notice that the other victims are still hiding in the bushes. Since he pleaded guilty at least the others can stay out of the spot light, unless of course the police let slip who the other victims were. Who knows.

The whole thing only came to light because the Italian police somehow leaked the story. German authorities had investigated for months without anything slipping out.

But the guy's "boss" in Italy (who AFAIK has been let going without any real charges) had been questioned by local police and "somehow" the interrogation protocols found their way to the media...
