Best European Attractions

Gloclalers,

I have travelled to nearly every country in Europe (except Ireland, Norway, Andorra and far east). I want to travel but dont want to just go to capital cities. I was looking for the most exciting things to do in Europe, that maybe I have missed and you lovely people have discovered. Mainly I travel on the weekends, or long weekends. But remember Im Australian and my country is twice the size of the entire European Union (with 480Million less people) so an 8 hour drive in each direction for a weekend is childs play for me.

Let me know your suggestions/and if you would like to come!

Katherine

Have a look at these pictures of sites from the Unesco World Heritage list in my home country and see if you find anything you like:

http://patrimoniuromanesc.ro/

Add into the mix good food, cheap drinks and lovely people.

Hi Katherine. If your only visit to Denmark was Copenhagen you have missed the astonish nature that this flat country has. The Island of Bornholm far east of Copenhagen is a gem in the middle of Oestersoen (the only part of the country got occupied by the USSR after the WWII).

More accessible is the west coast of Jutland and with it white sandy beaches strectching from the German border in the South to the picturesque village of Skagen at the far North. On 23 June you will hundreds of bonfire all the way up the coast and during summer the sun almost never sets.

Let me know if you want more info  :-)

I didn't read what others wrote so there may be some overlap, and it's hard to give you any advice without knowing more about your taste, but he's my list of must-see cities and attractions (some obvious, some not so).

Netherlands: Amsterdam (my home town), maybe Koninginnedag in Amsterdam (Queen's birthday on 30 April)

Belgium: Brugge/Bruges, possibly Gent and Antwerp

UK: London (best city in Europe IMO, including West End theaters), Edinburgh (if possible during the festival), possibly Cambridge and Stone Henge

France; Mont Saint-Michel (Normandy), Saint Emilion (Bordeaux), perhaps Saint Paul-de-Vence (near Monaco), Burgundy (3 hours from Geneva, great for wine lovers), Eurodisney if you're into that.

Italy: Venice, Rome, Toarmina and the Etna (at Sicily)

Germany: Neuschwannstein castle (near Munich), Oktoberfest in Munich

Czech Republic: Prague, Karlstejn castle (near Prague)

Croatia/Bosnia: Plitvice National Park, Zagreb, possibly Split and Sarajevo

Estonia: Talinn

Greece: Athens, Santorini (island)

Spain: Barcelona, and the Andalucia region (haven't visited it yet myself)

Sweden: The North in winter, including the Ice Hotel near Kiruna and a husky sledge tour.

Russia: St. Petersburg, during white nights
